Wellbeing Story Time

Picture story books often open up conversations and learning opportunities for what might be complex and hard-to-tackle concepts for children. This is true for conversations about mental health issues, which can at times feel awkward or be challenging to discuss. In this series, I will be introducing you to picture story books which will not only entertain but introduce children to a range of mental health issues which they or someone they know might experience.

Everyone gets worried at some point in their life… it might be an upcoming exam, meeting new people, travelling to an unknown place… worries are a part of life! But sometimes, these can become so big that it takes all the fun out of our life, and that can be a challenge!

After listening to the story, you could…

  • Draw a picture of your Worry Monster.
  • Give your Worry Monster a special name.
  • Write about your worry and pretend to ‘feed’ the worry to your Worry Monster.
  • Remember – as a parent, it would be helpful to model this first to share that even adults have worries and we all work through this as well.
