LIBRARY NEWS

Welcome to Week 4 in the library!

This Week’s Reads

Students across Kindergarten to Year 2 will focus on nonfiction stories this week. They will determine that books can be about real or not-real things, be introduced to the terms fiction and nonfiction, learn how to locate them in the library, and also know what special features can be found in these books. Students will enjoy two stories and learn some interesting facts about Australian animals.

Stage 2 has completed their Australian author research and will now begin presenting this information. I look forward to sharing some of their work in the following newsletter. They will also read a short story from another Aussie literature legend, Paul Jennings.

I’m looking forward to beginning a new unit with Stage 3, where they learn about fake news. Apart from literature appreciation, an essential part of library lessons is educating students about information literacy. Never before in history have people been exposed to such a vast amount of information, so how do we know if what we’re reading and seeing is true? This term, students will learn to find information, check if it's true, and use information responsibly, especially online. You can view a Behind the News clip here to watch a short clip about this topic. On top of all that, they’ll be listening to the first chapter of Jackie French’s shortlisted Book of the Year for Younger Readers, Tigg and the Bandicoot Bushranger.

SORA Books of the Week

This week, SORA is celebrating some great Australian reads. Your child can access these at home by logging into SORA using their school email and password. A key thing to remember is to NOT look for Holy Trinity School. We are part of the Australian Catholic Education Network (ACEN) library, so you must search for this. You can find instructions here.

Coming Soon - National Simultaneous Storytime Day. Wednesday, 21st May at 12 pm.

This Wednesday, classes across the school will participate in the National Simultaneous Storytime. Every year, a picture book written and illustrated by an Australian author and illustrator is read simultaneously in libraries, schools, pre-schools, family daycares, childcare centres, family homes, bookshops, and many other places around the country. Now in its 25th successful year, it is a fun event that aims to promote the value of reading and literacy. This year, we will all enjoy The Truck Cat by Deborah Frenkel.

Please register at the ALIA website here to join us at home and watch the virtual reading.

Term 2 Secondary English Texts

Secondary students are reading diverse stories from various countries, cultures, and times this term. They will read these during class, their DEAR period, and at home. Extension texts have also been included for students who finish reading early.

Year 7 - Naveed

Year 8 - Trash

Year 9 - Science Fiction theme

Year 10 - Deadly Unna?

PRC Update

Congratulations to Matilda Andrews on completing the PRC Challenge. Well done and great reading!

When your child has completed reading the required books, log them onto the PRC website and print off the reading log to return to school.

SORA also has special NSW PRC collections that your child can borrow from.

Apologies to Tamsin!

In my last newsletter, I included a photo of Tamsin borrowing a story from the library, but I said it was her sister, Roxy. Thanks to Tamsin’s reminder (sorry!), I will include her photo with the correct name. I hope you enjoyed the story, Tamsin!

Around the Library

Our library is a busy place with students from K-10 visiting for lessons and to enjoy their breaks. Students have been enjoying their time here doing lots of fun things.

Meet the Readers

Brother and sister, Ashton and Aleirah, came to borrow their books before school last week. Did you know that students can borrow books before and after school?

Meet Jelena, a Year 9 student who loved reading The Hunger Games for her Science Fiction unit so much that she borrowed book two in the series before she had even finished the first!

Reading for Pleasure - It’s Good for You!

If you’ve ever doubted the benefits of reading for pleasure, Softlink has an excellent article about this. It offers tips for supporting your child at home and ideas for encouraging this wonderful habit beyond primary school.

Happy reading,

Mrs Toni Fraser
