Junior School

Mother's Day Mass
This morning, our Junior School community came together to celebrate Mother’s Day Mass. As always, it was wonderful that so many mothers, maternal figures and guests were able to join us for the celebration of the Eucharist. Our mums were then treated to a beautiful morning tea kindly hosted by our Junior School dads. A wonderful show of community spirit.
My thanks to Alicia Raso, Fr Oscar, Ann Clarke, Holly Allen and the Year 4 Blue students for their contribution to Mass, ensuring it was a reverent and memorable occasion. In particular a special thank you to the three Mother’s (Jaqueline Bartlett-Day, Tanya Skidmore, Jacqueline Quinn-Smith) who shared their experiences as a mum with their son/s at TC. We appreciate your honest insight into your journey as a mother, and are grateful you were able to contribute positively to our Mass.
Edmund Rice Day
This year, our college will celebrate Edmund Rice Day on Tuesday, 13 May. This day brings the community together to commemorate and celebrate our history and charism as a Catholic school in the Edmund Rice tradition. The focus of the day is on service to others and all funds raised during the day are directed to well established projects in India that the College has a long history of supporting.
As is tradition the Junior School boys will run a cake stall for Morning Tea. We ask that all Junior School families provide a plate of food for the cake stall. We ask that all cakes/slices are dropped to the Junior School Library on Tuesday morning in either a clearly labelled or disposable container. Please be mindful of not providing foods with nuts as an ingredient.
The schedule for the day can be found below:
- 8.30am - JS Class normal start
- 8.45am - Edmund Rice Mass, Sports Centre
- 9.45am - Edmund Rice Activities in class

Premier's Reading Challenge
During Library this week, students in Years 4-6 excitedly talked about the Premier's Reading Challenge with has already begun for 2025. The annual challenge is designed to encourage all students in Western Australian school to read and make literacy as fun as possible. Head of Library Ms Purnell explained to students that the event involves reading in many different formats including print books along with other formats such as graphic novels, magazines, eBooks and can ever include listening to audiobooks!
Students who log their reading activities go in the draw to win weekly prizes. As well as prizes from the Premier's Reading Challenge, Ms Purnell will be running a weekly prize draw for Trinity students who manage to log any form of weekly reading on the Premier's Reading Challenge website.

Tips for Encouraging Your Son to Read
Develop or continue a daily reading routing in a calm setting without distractions. If your son is reluctant, you could join him for reading time. This is especially important for dads to role-model regular reading.
If daily reading time is difficult to fit into you family schedule, you may need to negotiate alternatives, for example reading during the week rather than weekends. You may also find that your son is too tired to read in the evening, so reading after school or before dinner time may be a better alternative.
Don't set over-realistic goals for your son. If he is a reluctant reader, try encouraging him to read for small amounts of time to begin. Boys are often extrinsically motivated so you may wish to add a reward as incentive!
Encourage your son to read a wide variety of items, such as novels, graphic novels, non-fiction books, magazines, newspaper articles and eBooks.
It is important that your son chooses what he reads, and it is best if you encourage him to do this without any judgement. You can also read what he reads and have a conversation about the book including what your son liked or disliked, their favourite characters, the setting etc.
Read to your son or read together. Try taking turns by reading a page or paragraph each.
Read a book together that is based on a movie or TV series and then watch the adaptation.
Visit a bookstore with your son and see what books are the most popular or recommended to read.
Organise a book swap with family or friends.
