Year 7 News

Welcome back to second semester, while some of us have had a little extended holiday, the year 7 cohort has done a magnificent job managing without Mr Mayo and Mr Hallson. They have been noticeably missed and students are eagerly awaiting their return! It’s hard to believe it’s only week three with so much happening on campus already. Athletics Competitions, Aspiring Athletes bonding day, NAIDOC week celebrations, just to name a few.
Next week we will be having special guest speakers from the “Pelvic Pain Foundation” an interstate organisation coming to speak with year 7 girls around menstrual education as part of our year 7 health unit this semester. We are privileged to be able to offer this to our students thanks to a special grant obtained by our college wellbeing team.
Aspiring Athletes
A huge congratulations to the successful applicants for the Aspiring Athletes Program: Billy Bremner, Jaxon Bull, Ruby Galletti, Lachy Lindsay, Leila Mahoney, Sonny Mahoney, Tyson Mc Innes, Amira Moss, Taylah Savage, Ivy Smith and Liam Thomson. I am sure these students will demonstrate the skill, talent and above all the sportsmanship we expect at Kurnai College, we wish them a great semester! To celebrate the beginning of the program, these students attended a bonding day at the Summit: In true Kurnai College challenge, this day was one to remember!
NAIDOC Week
Although NAIDOC week was during the school holidays, we celebrated at Kurnai College last week with a BBQ on Tuesday and music in the courtyard. During homegroup, year 7’s learnt about the history of the National Aborigines and Islanders Day Observance Committee (NAIDOC) in 1938 and its evolution into what we now know as NAIDOC week. Some students attended the official NAIDOC ceremony hosted at the University Campus this year and we practiced circle time in our classes, learning the value and importance of sharing, listening and reflecting.
Athletics Day
It has certainly been a term for sport at the campus, with Jie, Jaxon, Amira, Leila, Ruby and Ivy representing year 7’s at Wellington Athletics last week. The students did an amazing job upholding our school pillars and maintained their exceptional sportsmanship we always expect of our students. From all accounts it was a successful day for the College, with several students across the year levels progressing to the next round! Congratulations to all who competed.
Learning Behaviour Updates
Teachers are currently completing this Terms first learning behaviour update. These should be published next week and are available via COMPASS, if you need help accessing your child’s Learning Behaviour Update, please contact our friendly office staff for assistance. Learning Behaviour Updates are a great way to observe how your child is going in the classroom and their learning behaviours, if you have any concerns about your child’s progress or performance, please contact their classroom teachers, we value parent communication and want to be sure we are supporting every student with their needs. Alternatively, Parent Teacher Conversations will be at the end of this term.
Classroom Expectations
Students have been reminded through assembly and homegroup around expectations for the classroom and the yard. We have recently seen an increase in students using derogatory and offensive language, which is not tolerated in our school community. Students have been warned about the consequences of using this language and I just want to acknowledge the overwhelming support I have received from our parents regarding this matter. Thank-you we appreciate it!
School Uniform
Several students have been wearing navy skirts to school this term, if your child would prefer to wear a skirt to school, we have a Kurnai College school skirt available at the front office. We also have navy pants, shorts and jumpers available in the Advocates Office for students who need them. We encourage all students to be wearing full school uniform.
Positive Acknowledgement
Lastly, congratulations to the following students: Onyx Monahan, Layla Geddes, Mahleah Geddes and Eize Klein for receiving the highest number of KPA’s this term. Keep up the great work year 7!
