Welcome back to Semester 2, as we approach week 4 I would like to acknowledge the positive way in which students have returned after the break. From a campus perspective term 3 has started really positively. I have been able to get into a number of classes to observe and what I have witnessed on the whole, has been calm classrooms, where students have been engaged in the teaching and learning process.
It has been a busy return to school with NAIDOC celebrations, our year 9 and 10 students all heading to Lardner park to engage in the annual Job Skills expo, where they are exposed to a range of different pathways that they could potentially choose to follow in the not-too-distant future. This week, our year 8 and 9 students also experienced a performance by Brainstorm productions.
Although NAIDOC week falls during the school holidays, on Tuesday last week we celebrated NAIDOC week at the Churchill campus by having a BBQ lunch for all students, whilst listening to famous aboriginal artists songs playing during the break. This event had a great vibe about it and was well received by all.
Following Tuesday’s Campus event, the college had our big community event at the University campus. All of our Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander students attended this event. The day kicked off with a smoking ceremony performed by Auntie Minnie and our very own Deadlee Dancers. The ceremony and events that followed were a fantastic celebration. We also had many of our music students who provided entertainment throughout the day. This year’s theme was “Keep the fire burning! Blak, loud and proud”. A big congratulations and thanks to all of our students and staff that were involved in putting on such a great day of celebration.
On the last day of school, we closed out term 2 by having a house colour competition. This event was enjoyed by all students who attended and was a great way to round out a great first semester. The winning house on the day was Yellow “Siddle”.
The college is very excited to kick off our Aspiring Athlete program this term. Churchill campus has 30 students who were successfully accepted into the program, aimed at developing skills, strategies, and training programs to enhance their ability in their chosen sport. In the first week of Term 3, the KAAP students attended the SUMMIT in Trafalgar where they were put through a gruelling set of activities. Students were asked to work as a team to complete a number of Tough Mudder style obstacles in order to complete the course. Students had a great day and were challenged throughout the day. This was a great way to kick of this new college initiative.
Over the holidays we had contractors working to complete the refurbishment of two new learning spaces. Both these spaces have now been completed and are online for staff and students to access for teaching and learning. The first space is a flexible learning space that will provide us with a large area that could be used for assemblies, seminars, lunchtime activities, alternate programs and learning that requires an open plan room.
The second room is a general-purpose classroom that has been fitted out with brand-new furniture, technology and provides a really nice learning environment for students. The completion of these works will allow us to move on to the next campus project, which will be external works to enable a new year level locker bay area as well as some retaining walls and landscaping.
