Work Based Learning - Nick Thompson

Charlton College Year 11 and Year 12 students are provided with several different pathway options, which if chosen, allows them the opportunity to link with local businesses and learn lifelong skills for employment all whilst continuing to study at school.

This week we would like to give a special mention to Nick Thompson, our Year 12 student who is currently completing a Head Start School Based Apprenticeship (SBA) as a Builder with Jack Thompson Constructions, each Wednesday and Thursday.

Nick is well into his apprenticeship as he signed up to a SBA back in February 2023 after studying VET Building and Construction and completing two weeks with Fort Constructions in Melbourne for work experience during Year 10.

Nick has been able to organise himself and his timetable to ensure he successfully completes his Year 12 studies, whilst working two days as a builder, and committing his talents with the Bendigo Pioneers U18 squad. Nick is also well known by parents and staff for his amazing barista skills which he has shown during Tumbling Tots on a Tuesday.

Head Start is a revised model for school-based apprenticeships and traineeships (SBAT) undertaken by students which allows them to spend more time in paid work and on the job training to develop the skills that industry and employers need whilst also attending school to work toward a Year 12 qualification.

Students are supported by a Head Start Coordinator, their role is to support students to ensure they are progressing well with their schoolwork, training and employment.

During the SBAT students enrol with a training organisation to complete a Certificate II or III level qualification.

If you would like to know more about the Head Start Program, please contact your Head Start Coordinator Mary-Ann Sait on 0400 696 156 or Mary-Ann.Sait@education.vic.gov.au

Thank you Jack Thompson Constructions and Mary-Ann Sait for your partnership.

We wish Nick all the best with the remainder of his schooling year, his future career as a Builder and his return to the football field post injury.
