Year 5/6

Our 5/6 “YES YOU CAN” camp!

Our 5/6 camp was a wonderful opportunity for us to bond, have fun, and build resilience together as a group. Leading up to the camp, the nerves were high… the first day we were anxiously trying to navigate ourselves around our temporary quarters, working out who was where and how we would go about tackling the challenges camp brings…

… day two came around and we woke up energised and a little more confident to give things a go. We ate great food, we slept well, we played volleyball, basketball, cricket. We did crochet, we sang, and we split off into our activity groups to attempt some pretty scary and exhilarating challenges. The flying fox and giant swing were a huge highlight. The screams and epic grins and nervous shakes and proud faces were all part of it. We encouraged each other to choose our own challenge… some of us wanted to go to the top of the giant swing, others just wanted to swing back and forth, pretending we were two again at the playground, enjoying the breeze on our faces and the happy cheers from our friends. “Yeah you’re a fairy!” or “You can fly!” were just some of the cheers we could hear.

The Initiative challenge was testing. We initially couldn’t figure out how to problem solve and we yelled at each other and wanted to give up… but we didn’t… we worked through it together and found a way to unite ourselves as a group to solve each and every problem and meet the challenge criteria. We chanted for our group. We took group photos. We found the blue star! We made damper and pizza. Some of us were even creative and put a marshmallow in the middle of our damper. We solved the puzzles. We worked together to get our group through the big spider web. We got the frisbee into the net. We made our way across the wooden “bridges” above the “lava”... and after all that… we slept at night. Really, we actually did, with the help of Mrs Janky’s running water sounds (which some people thought was crackling bacon). Oh and by the way, did you know that Mrs Janky is psychic?

We have officially labelled our camp as the “Yes you can” camp. Now, any time any of us say something like “I can’t do this”, “I can’t read”, “I can’t do maths”... we turn to them and say “Yes you can!”
