Learning News 4/5/6

Mrs Amy Phillips

Welcome to Term 3! We have had a very busy start, with students working diligently on our Peter Pan musical. Tickets for the musical will be available for purchase from the school office very soon.

Congratulations to Parker and Archie, who both won our Peter Pan ticket design competition. It was very difficult to choose, as all students put in an amazing effort, and the staff couldn't decide between the final two, so we agreed to use both.

You may have noticed a slight change in this term's homework. Due to extra learning time being dedicated to our musical rehearsals, some of our 'Big Write' planning time at school has been reduced. Consequently, I will now be sending the planning page home as part of the homework, along with some spelling practice and our usual maths pages.

The planning page should be used to support 'talk homework.' Students should discuss their ideas with someone at home to ensure they are well-prepared for our 'Big Write' on Thursdays. Please ensure the planning page is brought back to school on Thursday morning so students can use it to support their writing.

Next week, we will be resuming our community visits, including visits to Richardson House and the boys' attendance at Men's Shed. This term, I have also organised a special activity for our girls while the boys are at Men's Shed. Barbara Harris will be coming to school to teach our girls how to knit.

Thank you very much, Barbara, for volunteering your time to work with our students.

Stage 3 Maths

We have been busy for the last two weeks exploring different strategies to solve multiplication problems. We have investigated properties of prime and composite numbers along with consolidating our understanding of factors, multiples and products. Learning to justify our answers is a challenge and we have explored different ways of doing this through the use of concrete materials, drawing and diagrams like Factor Trees.

We will continue this topic into week 3 and then revisit in weeks 6/7 and again early in Term 4. Pictured are students working on a game to challenge one another to fit arrays into a set area using a spinner to determine dimensions.

Year 4 Maths

The last 2 weeks in maths the children have been focusing on Division and the connection it has to Multiplication. We have be using arrays to solve a range of division problems. I am very proud of the independance the children have shown in trying to solve a range of division problems.
