What's Been Happening in Year 5

Aquarium Excursion

5A

Ambel: Jellyfish

At the aquarium, we got to learn about Jelly Fish. They are so cool that some of them are bioluminescent, which means that they can kind of glow in the dark. Jellyfish stings are common in Australia but each person can react differently to the sting. They have really cool names such as moon jellyfish and lion's mane. They actually don’t have eyes or any senses for that matter.

Noah: Lunch in the city

During the day, we got to go have lunch beside the Yarra River. There were so many seagulls making the weirdest noises. We all had a bit of fun mimicking the birds and maybe a bit too loudly. We got to see a huge red helicopter land next us, it was so loud and so close to us.

Niamh: - Glass Tunnel

At the aquarium, there is a huge path through a glass tunnel. In the tunnel we could see sharks, sting rays, schools of fish, turtles, and more fish. The turtles were my favourite. There was one turtle that was bigger than me that was calmly floating past me to get to its favourite rock. The sharks in the tank were nothing like the movies or the news, they were so tranquil as they zig-zagged through the water. The coolest shark is the leopard shark with spots all over its body.

Peyton: - Touch Tank

One of the first places we went was the rock pool. It was filled with super cool seashells, shark eggs and even star fish that we got to pat. We got to hold a huge conch shell that echoed when you put it to your ear. The shark eggs were the best part of the rock pool. We saw three types of shark eggs. The coolest egg was the Gummy shark, it looked like a seaweed spiral and when the shark hatched it looked like a blooming flower. It was so much fun exploring the little rock pool and the gooey shark eggs.

Jordan: 4D Cinema

We got to go in a cool cinema to watch a bit of the movie ‘Happy Feet’ which is about penguins. The cinema was 4D, that means 4 dimensional so we can watch, listen, smell and even feel the movie. There was cold air, snow falling and the seats shook when we watched the eggs hatch. It was really cool to see a penguin hatching, I really enjoyed it and felt like I was in the movie.

Thalia: Fish

We learnt about all the different types of fish from big to little, and colourful to hidden in the coral. The eels were my favourite to look at because they were long and wiggly. They swam like snakes slither and they’re so different from regular fish, it was really interesting to watch. I also loved patting the starfish, did you know that they can grow their legs back when they break? Crazy!

Armanita: - Penguins

On our excursion, we got to see the penguin enclosure. There were 54 penguins swimming around super quickly, we couldn’t believe how fast they were. Pesto the penguin was the only baby in the enclosure, he was the fluffiest and so small. His mum’s name was Basil. The male penguins had a competition to see how tall they could be, this is to find a female to be their mate.

Deon: - Crocodile

At the aquarium, we got to see Pinjarra the mega croc! This crocodile is 65 years old, weighs almost 800 kg and is just under 6 metres long. In the enclosure, the crocodile has 3 fishes that clean his teeth, body and they even eat his poo! YUCK! This crocodile was looking at all of us like we were his next meal, Chanel was terrified. Pinjarra was lucky because he had his own personal heating spot while the rest of us were in the cold. BRRRRR.
