On the 8th August, we celebrate the feast day of St. Mary MacKillop.
Who was St. Mary MacKillop?
Mary MacKillop, born in Melbourne, Australia in 1842, was a pioneering educator and the first Australian to be canonised as a saint. She co-founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart in 1866, focusing on providing education to poor children and establishing schools across Australia. Despite facing opposition and challenges, her dedication to her faith and social justice never wavered. Her work laid the foundation for Catholic education in Australia, and her legacy continues through the ongoing work of our Catholic School teachers today and the Sisters of St Joseph.
St. Mary MacKillop Prayer
Ever generous God,
You inspired Saint Mary MacKillop to live her life faithful to the Gospel of Jesus Christ and constant in bringing hope and encouragement to those who were disheartened, lonely, or needy. We ask that our faith and hope be renewed by the Holy Spirit so that we too, like Mary MacKillop, may live with courage, trust, and openness. We ask this through Jesus Christ. Amen.
Famous St. Mary MacKillop Quote
"Never see a need without doing something about it."
