Hello families and friends!
Winter is passing by so quickly. We are having happy days in our Year 3 house; days full of learning and fun!
Reading and Writing
We have begun immersing ourselves in the work of author and illustrator Graeme Base.
Here are some of our thoughts about his style so far:
His illustrations are very detailed.
He writes in verse: 4 lines per verse. His words rhyme.
He loves to draw animals and sometimes he invents hybrid creatures!
Graeme Base’s books are very interactive. It is exciting and challenging to translate his hidden messages by examining the ciphers! A cipher is a message written in a secret code.
There are also many hidden objects on each and every page!
Some students worked with a partner to “crack the code” in the book Enigma.
As part of our author study, we took notes about Graeme Base.
We were asked to take notes about things that were interesting or important.
Next, we used our notes to write a biography about Graeme Base.
We learnt that a biography has features such as:
Mathematics
We have continued practising our division skills this term.
We have enjoyed the challenge!
We have used concrete materials such as counters and Base Ten blocks as well as created pictures or diagrams to help us.
We also skip count or use known facts to help us solve division problems.
Look at some of the strategies that we are using:
We are proud of all our students' efforts, positive mindsets and look forward to acknowledging and celebrating their accomplishments with them throughout these units.

All the Year 4 students were eager to connect with school friends and teachers again after the holidays. 4C got to meet their new teacher, Jess Bonavia. Term 3 is a busy one with special Olympic events, Science Week and Book Week celebrations to look forward to. Have you been thinking about your Book Week dress up costume?
In English we have been engaged in a Maragret Wild author study. We are looking at the narrative structure of her texts, her amazing word choices and identifying the themes and messages. Which Margaret Wild book titles are you familiar with?
In Maths we have been exploring large numbers and understanding their place value parts. Did you know that Australia’s population is currently 26 719 508? Can you read this number? Can you write it down in words?
We are also learning about 2D and 3D shapes, using words such as edges, vertices, faces, angles and parallel lines to describe their features. Here are some photos of 3D shapes we have made.
In Humanities we are learning about disabilities and showing understanding towards others.
In Health we are continuing to explore our emotions and recognising the emotions of others. We are discussing strategies that support us to remain calm and ready for learning such as focussing on our breathing, getting exercise, eating healthy snacks and being well rested.
In Science we are identifying eucalypts and exploring how animals and plants interact in an environment. Here are some photos from our recent discovery walks.

In Reading, Year 5 students have been diving into the hilarious and heartwarming world of David Walliams. They have explored texts including Gangsta Granny, Dribbling Drew and Billionaire Boy. Year 5s have been focusing on defining and identifying figurative language within these texts as well exploring their purpose and meaning. Students have also been working on their reading comprehension skills such as analysing and making inferences about characters.
In Writing, the Year 5 students have been learning about how to create engaging and detailed narrative paragraphs. We will continue to learn about expanding our sentences using the five senses, WOW words, and even figurative language.
In Maths, we have been learning about fractions. Students have been engaged in skills such as adding, subtracting and ordering fractions. They have also learnt how to place fractions on a number line and how to find the fraction of a quantity. In conjunction, we have also been learning all about 3D shapes. This includes identifying, naming and comparing 3D shapes as well as exploring their properties.
In Science, we will be shedding light on the topic of light! Students will continue to investigate how light travels, how we see, and the different sources of light.
In Health, the Year 5s have been focusing on relationships. This includes learning about the importance of healthy relationships and discussing effective strategies to build and maintain positive friendships and relationships.
This term, we have been exploring the topic of Australian Migration and Social Justice in Humanities. This includes learning about the history of migration to Australia, the reasons people migrate, the diverse cultures that make up our nation, and the different experiences and perspectives of Australian democracy and citizenship.
We are excited for a term filled with engaging learning experiences and growth. Stay tuned!
Kind regards,
Grade 5 Teachers
