Our Foundation students recently completed two exciting Fire Education sessions with the Newport fire brigade.
In the first session, the firefighters taught us essential safety messages: firefighters are helpers, the difference between good and bad fires, crawling low in smoke, identifying a safe meeting place, understanding emergencies and how to call Triple Zero (000).
In the second session, we discussed safe meeting places at home and learned the Stop, Drop, Cover, and Roll technique. The highlight was definitely the visit from two fire trucks, where students climbed through the trucks and used the fire hoses.
Thank you to the Newport fire brigade, especially Firefighter Joe, Francis and Ben’s dad, for educating our students on fire safety, equipping them with vital knowledge and skills.
On Wednesday 24th July the Year 1 students were visited by Anne-Chioban from Ceres Environment Park for our Towards Zero Waste incursion. This incursion is linked to our Term 3 BQT questio - 1. 'How do we get healthy eating options and reduce food waste by learning about where waste comes from?' and 2. 'How we can all use the 6 R’s to prevent so much rubbish going into landfill or ending up in our environment?'.
First we learnt about the history of Ceres, which is very similar to Newport Lakes Reserve, both sites used to be bluestone quarries, were then turned into landfill sites and later restored to a natural habitat. We discussed some of the types of rubbish we find, guessed how long they take to decompose and then learnt how long each item actually takes to decompose by placing them on a timeline that stretched from 2-4 weeks right up to 10,000 years! Anne-Chioban taught us a very cool 6 R’s dance that your little people can show you at home. The dance has actions to go with each method for minimising our waste which is to Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, and Rot. After this we had a rubbish sorting race where we worked together to sort rubbish into the correct rubbish bins that we find in our homes.
It was a great learning experience and got us all very excited for our Ceres Farming for our Future Excursion in week 8 of this term!
Yesterday everyone in 1MK went to the MPR to learn stuff from Ceres, and her name was Anne-Chioban. We did some activities together. The first activity was the timeline. I got a rubbish piece and had to choose what years it was. I chose 4-5 months for a glass bottle but it was actually 10,000 years and I was confused. After that we did a race, two people had to go at a time and we tied with 1IJ. If we made a mistake with the rubbish there was 5 seconds added. We got 1 minute and 15 seconds.
Did you know we did a dance, it went like this - Rethink, Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle and Rot. That’s it. My favourite part is when we did the dance and the timeline. - by Reis
In Term 2, Year 2 classes read the fabulous novel ‘Runt’, by Australian author Craig Silvey. We loved reading it so much, we held a special ‘Woolarama Show’ day.
Students could wear a beanie to school to show their support for team Shearer. We made a giant humble pie with all sorts of ingredients that Susie Shearer might use. We wrote letters to Craig Silvey expressing what we loved about his story. We held an agility course contest. And we also had a humble pie tasting contest, where students had to guess the ingredients. Recently, we discovered that a movie has been made based on the book. So, we are very excited to be going on an excursion to the Sun Theatre to see an exclusive preview.

Students have been creating rollercoasters to explore potential and kinetic energy!
Reach Program
On Friday, 26th of July, the REACH program visited the Year 5/6 classes.
REACH is a program to help primary and secondary students develop a sense of self-growth and respect for others. They came to tell us about belonging and empathy. They also talked to us about respect and shared their feelings. It made us feel important to the classroom. REACH played games with us and made us feel comfortable. One of the activities shared was when we had to draw a house and put in our dreams, challenges, and people who supported us. It helped us learn about our classmates and ourselves.

Guest Speaker
Last week we had a guest speaker, Mariam Elhouli. We learnt the power of perseverance, hard work and not giving up. Her story is a very inspirational one. Like us, she also went to Newport Lakes Primary School, all the way from Foundation to Year 6. She had 10 siblings, so she was constantly surrounded by family. But then when she was 16, she got sick of her mum’s rules and ran away from home. Mariam shared her challenges and how she evolved into a successful author and business woman. From going through wars, raising 5 children, while also running a brand, Mariam truly showed us what determination was. It was an amazing experience, and we took a lot from the talk.

Beaks Experiment in STEM
In class, the Year 5/6 students have been learning about animal adaptations. We have been doing a handful of fun activities based on animal adaptations. One of them was trying to get food with different beaks. The ways we represented the beaks was by using different items to work in different ways. We used foldback clips, straws, spoons, forks and tweezers and they each had a unique purpose to help us discover why different birds need certain beaks. In our experiment we tested the beaks on food sources.
Like marshmallows (representing rodents), gummies, (representing insects) dry pasta (representing fish) and rice (representing seeds). This activity encouraged us to use our critical thinking and come up with ways to pick up as much of the food as we can in 1 minute. In the end we found that rice was the easiest to collect because they were so small and you could pick up lots of them in 1 go. Whereas for the other food you had to pick them up one by one. And the best “beak” was the spoon and tweezers because they were perfectly shaped for each food.
Overall the experience was amazing and our findings were definitely beneficial…

Good luck to the students representing NLPS at next week's District Athletics. We know you will give it your all and do us proud!
