Year 1 News

What an action packed week Year 1 has had in week 2.  We kicked off the week with an incursion from Playground Craze, learnt about some cool science experiments in reading, followed on with our writing of procedural texts, explored finding the difference between two numbers in maths and then had an excursion to Dr Loz at SciencePlay to finish off the week.

Playground Craze

Playground Craze was a fun and energetic singing and dancing wellbeing session that taught us all some valuable skills about being kind to ourselves and others.  The Year 1’s learnt that the most powerful words in the world are ‘I am’ and the best thing is that they get stronger when we say them to ourselves everyday. We picked 3 positive things that are special about us and added the words “I am” in front of them one at a time.  The more we say these words to ourselves the more confident and happy we feel. We also learnt that we can choose to respond in a kind and happy manner when other people are mean to us by saying “oh cool, thanks for letting me know” or “hey, that’s great I didn’t realise that”. If we respond calmly to meanness then we walk away feeling good and the other person realises that their words can’t hurt us. We are going to continue to practise these two strategies in the classroom and schoolyard regularly.

Dr Loz Excursion

On Thursday each Year 1 class went to visit Dr Loz at SciencePlay in Altona.  This excursion was linked to our Big Question Time topic of ‘Where is the science in my kitchen… how and why do everyday materials change’.  With Dr Loz we got to use our critical thinking and problem solving skills to sort out some different sized rainbow materials using sieves and magnets.  The goal for the day was to see how many mistakes we could make because science is all about making mistakes and learning from them. We then explored making some seaweed based worms which we will get to bring home once they have dried out a little.  To finish off we explored how solids (coloured bi-carb soda) and liquids (coloured vinegar) can mix together to make a gassy, bubbly, rainbow reaction. When we got back to school we used our procedural writing skills to record one of the experiments as a procedure that we could follow at home.  It was such a great session and we hope that our little scientists continue to count their mistakes and learn from them over this term!  Thank you again to our amazing parent helpers, without you we would not be able to run these fabulous excursions!
