LITERACY:
Reading: For the remainder of this term we will be focussing on reading persuasive texts, responding to texts drawing on cultures & experiences (Indigenous or Stories from the past) and summarising and retelling stories and information.
It is important that the children continue to read daily with an adult and to practise retelling the stories and information from the texts that they have been reading.
Writing: The Grade 1 students will be focussing on planning and writing imaginative texts, writing about their memories and writing about a stimulus and exploring persuasive and letter writing. The children will be encouraged to use strategies and knowledge that they have learnt through our explicit Grammar lessons and Writing lessons. The students will continue to use their Writer’s Notebook entries to record, develop and expand on their ideas for Writing.
In Grammar students will revise how to use punctuation such as end of sentence punctuation and capital letters. They will also revise and extend what they have learnt about parts of speech including nouns, using ‘vivid verbs’ and adjectives. Students will continue to be encouraged to apply this understanding in their writing.
Speaking and Listening: In Grade one the students are involved in a variety of Speaking and Listening opportunities such as Community Circles, Share Time, Think-Pair-Share and Turn & Talk. These opportunities occur throughout the day and all children are involved in the activities.
NUMERACY: For the remainder of the term in Maths, students will continue to revise concepts we have covered throughout the year to consolidate and extend our learning. We will concentrate on using different strategies to solve problems, to check our answers and record our thinking using correct number formation.
INQUIRY: During our Inquiry unit, students will continue exploring how the past differs from the present, looking specifically at how toys, transport, technology, communication and lifestyles have changed over time. Students will investigate an item or object and how it has evolved to make life easier. They will share their findings with the class.
Music
The Grade 1 students will keep singing and playing instruments to express their experiences and ideas. In the coming weeks, they will also learn some Wadawurrung language by singing the song “Bunjil’s Birds”.
Physical Education:
As we approach the second half of Term 4, Year 1 students will complete their unit on Gymnastics, and also work on linked movement sequences through dance.
Art
In the last half of the term, Visual Arts students will dive into a "choice-based" learning approach, focused on Teaching for Artistic Behavior (TAB). This method empowers students to choose their own artistic paths, exploring what interests them most. Art stations include clay sculpting, drawing, painting, collage, and construction. Each station allows students to experiment, build skills, and express creativity. We’re excited to see the unique and personal art each student will create!
STEM:
In the second half of this term Grade One students will be focussing on caring for their local area. They will continue to learn about our dune system and what lives there, our coastline and the plants and animals that call it their home. Students will discuss being responsible at the beach, caring for our oceans and strategies to look after our local environment.
