Auslan

Grade 1 and 2

This week in Auslan, Grade 1 and 2 students will explore colours through a range of fun, interactive signing activities. Students will learn to ask and answer simple questions such as "What colour?" while identifying and describing objects in the classroom using Auslan. Through movement games, partner conversations and Colour Bingo, students will practise recognising colour signs, following simple signed instructions and responding using high-frequency signs and gestures. These activities will help build confidence using Auslan to communicate in everyday classroom situations while reinforcing key vocabulary in an engaging and hands-on way.

Grade 3 and 4

This week in Auslan, Grade 3 and 4 students will expand their descriptive signing skills by learning vocabulary for common classroom objects and location signs. Students will use signs for size, colour and position to describe objects and give visual clues, helping their classmates identify what is being described. Through interactive games such as Guess What? and Draw What I Sign, students will practise watching carefully, following signed information and communicating clearly using simple descriptive phrases. These activities will build students' confidence in describing people, places and things while developing their receptive and expressive Auslan skills.

Grade 5 and 6

This week in Auslan, our Grade 5 and 6 students will focus on planning and presenting clear, step-by-step instructions for a range of everyday tasks. Working collaboratively in small groups, students will sequence events using list buoys, appropriate Auslan signs and facial expression to ensure their instructions are easy for others to follow. As they rehearse and present their demonstrations, students will practise giving and responding to feedback, working together to refine their presentations and communicate meaning clearly. These collaborative activities will strengthen students' confidence in using Auslan to plan, present and sequence information for an audience.

Visual Arts

In the classroom...

This week, students in all year levels will be finishing off their Christmas picture for the Christmas Card fundraiser. They will be using sharpies and watercolours to create dramatic and bold effect for an eye-catching card for families and friends. Stay tuned for more details later this term about how you can purchase these packs of cards, that feature your child’s drawings on the front!

STEM

Grade 1/2

This week, continuing on from last week’s exploration of animals and their habitats, students are using the iPad app Keynote to create a dedicated page for each habitat. They are learning to use a range of app features, including adding and editing text, adjusting size, font and colour, and inserting clip art and images from Google.  This task allows students to combine their understanding of how living things depend on their environment with developing digital design skills.

Grade 3/4

This week, continuing their learning about introduced species, Grade 3/4 students are extending their research by creating a ‘Wanted’ poster focused on specific introduced plants. Their poster will include information about where the species originated, why it was introduced to Australia, and the impacts it has had on native flora and fauna.

Grade 5/6

Students will build on their understanding of evolution by investigating how environmental conditions influence which traits are more likely to be passed on, helping species survive over time. Students will begin exploring biomimicry, examining how designers study features in nature and apply them to create innovative products and technologies. By linking biological adaptation to real-world object design, students will discover how scientific knowledge of evolution can inspire creative and sustainable solutions.
