Level 5 & 6

Welcome to Week 5!

Thank you to families who have already sent in their child's $10 investment requested for our upcoming CBL Power Challenge. We ask that the $10 investment be brought to the classroom by Monday 10th August.

Literacy

Reading

This week in Reading, students will be Literature Circles. Having explored the different discussion roles and practised how each one contributes to rich conversations, students are now ready to begin their first literature circle cycle. They will read their assigned chapters independently before completing their allocated role and meeting with their group to share their thinking, ask questions and deepen their understanding of the text. This collaborative approach encourages students to think critically, justify their ideas using evidence from the text and learn from the perspectives of others.

Writing

This week, students will continue our poetry unit by exploring two new forms of poetry: limericks and odes. Students will analyse the structure, language features and purpose of each style before creating and publishing their own poems to add to their growing poetry collection. This unit encourages creativity while strengthening students' understanding of poetic techniques and author craft.

Phormes

In Phormes this week, students are continuing to develop their understanding of Greek number prefixes, focusing on mono, di and tri. Through engaging word investigations and spelling activities, students will explore how these prefixes contribute

What you can do at home:

  • Encourage your child to complete their assigned reading each week and discuss the novel they are reading.
  • Ask them about their Literature Circle role and invite them to explain their thinking using evidence from the text.
  • You can also challenge them to identify words beginning with mono, di and tri in books, signs or everyday conversations and discuss what those words mean.

Maths

This week marks the second week of our Maths on the Move program, providing Grade 5 and 6 students with the opportunity to learn alongside peers across both year levels while continuing to build their understanding of maths concepts. Students will apply their knowledge of multiplying and dividing by powers of 10, as well as multiplying and dividing decimal numbers, as we transition into our new Measurement unit. Our focus will be on mass, capacity and volume, with students using their decimal skills to estimate, convert and solve real-world measurement problems.

What you can do at home:

  • Encourage your child to identify examples of mass, capacity and volume in everyday life, such as measuring ingredients while cooking, comparing the capacity of different containers or reading the mass of grocery items.
  • Providing opportunities to discuss and use decimals in real-life situations will help reinforce the concepts explored in class.

CBL

Big Idea: How can we use our power to create positive change globally?

Guiding Questions:

  • What is economic power?
  • What makes a business successful?
  • How can we use resources responsibly?
  • How can people use their ideas, skills and resources to improve the world around them?

Challenge: Create a small business, social enterprise or circular economy initiative that generates a profit for good.

Wellbeing

In this week's Respectful Relationships, students will begin Topic 6: Help Seeking with Activity 1 – I Wonder If I Need Help With This?. Students will explore the importance of recognising when they need support and identifying trusted people they can turn to for help. Through discussion and reflection, they will learn that seeking help is a positive and responsible strategy, building confidence to ask for assistance when faced with challenges both at school and beyond.

What you can do at home:

  • Talk with your child about the trusted adults and support networks they have both at home and at school.
  • Encourage open conversations about asking for help and reassure them that everyone needs support at times.
  • Discuss situations where they might need help and who they could turn to, reinforcing that seeking help is a sign of strength, not weakness.
