NAIDOC Week Celebrations in Grade 5/6

During Week 2 of this term, our Grade 5/6 class proudly celebrated NAIDOC Week by acknowledging the Traditional Custodians of the land on which we learn and pay our respects to Elders past and present.

Throughout the week, students participated in a range of engaging learning experiences that celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and achievements across the curriculum.

In Literacy, students explored the lives and achievements of inspiring First Nations Australians. We read and learnt about influential people including Ash Barty, Cathy Freeman, Adam Goodes, Jessica Mauboy and Eddie Mabo, discussing their contributions and the positive impact they have made on Australia.

In Mathematics, students investigated real-world data through the story of the bilby (mankarr) and the important conservation work undertaken by Aboriginal rangers in Western Australia. Using footage from a remote wildlife camera positioned at a bilby den, students observed and recorded the different animals that visited the site. They collected and organised data, identified patterns, and discussed what makes data effective and meaningful. It was fascinating to see native wildlife alongside predators such as feral cats and dingoes, leading to rich discussions about protecting Australia's unique native species.

NAIDOC Week provided a wonderful opportunity for our students to deepen their understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures while making meaningful connections across Literacy and Mathematics. It was a week filled with curiosity, respect and valuable learning that our students thoroughly enjoyed.
