Celebrating NAIDOC Week
Our Year 1/2 students had the privilege of celebrating NAIDOC Week through a week of stories, conversations, creativity and hands on learning. Together, we explored the rich histories, cultures and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples, Australia's First Peoples, while developing a deeper understanding of the importance of Country, community and respect.
Throughout the week, students also learned about the Wurundjeri Woi-wurrung Peoples, the Traditional Owners of the land on which our school stands. This helped students understand the importance of recognising and respecting the enduring connection that First Nations peoples have with Country.
Throughout the week, students explored the meaning of Country through a range of beautiful First Nations picture books. They learned that Country is much more than the land we walk on. It includes the sky, rivers, plants, animals and people. Through these stories, students discovered why Country is so important and why Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have cared for Country for thousands of years. These meaningful stories encouraged thoughtful conversations about belonging, respect and caring for the places we all share.
During our literacy lessons, students listened carefully to stories, shared their ideas and made personal connections to what they were reading. They learned to ask respectful and thoughtful questions about Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, Country and community. Through class discussions, students were encouraged to wonder, share their thinking and learn from one another, helping to build both their understanding and their curiosity.
Students also learned about the Aboriginal Flag, exploring the meaning behind each of its colours and discussing why the flag is an important symbol of culture, pride and identity. We also learned about the Torres Strait Islander Flag and the Australian Flag, discussing what each flag represents and why they are important. These conversations helped students develop a greater appreciation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander histories, cultures and traditions.
In Mathematics, students combined their learning about fractions with our NAIDOC Week focus by folding Aboriginal themed pictures into halves and quarters. This hands on activity helped students strengthen their understanding of equal parts while making meaningful connections across different areas of learning.
As part of our Sustainability learning, students explored how we can all care for our environment through the everyday choices we make. They investigated ways to reduce waste, reuse materials and recycle, while learning that caring for Country is something everyone can do. Students sorted different materials, discussed sustainable choices and reflected on how even small actions can make a positive difference to the world around us. These learning experiences encouraged students to think about how they can care for their classroom, their community and the environment every day.
During our Social and Emotional Learning lessons, students explored the importance of community, respect and making sure every voice is heard. They learned that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples have gathered in circles for thousands of years to share stories, listen, learn and make important decisions together. Students made thoughtful connections to our own Morning Circle, reflecting on how listening respectfully, showing kindness and including others helps build a strong classroom community where everyone feels welcome.
NAIDOC Week was a meaningful learning experience for our class. It gave students the opportunity to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, learn from First Nations stories and reflect on how we can all care for Country and each other. We are incredibly proud of the curiosity, respect and enthusiasm our students showed throughout the week, and we look forward to continuing these important conversations throughout the year.
