Sports Update

Vermont Secondary College

Division Athletics

Vermont continued its track and field dominance taking home the overall school champion at the Waverley Division Athletics carnival on the 30th of August. With over 150 talented athletes competing, it is no surprise that Vermont we also won the Intermediate and Senior shields too – word on the track was the V on our uniform actually stands for Victorious, not Vermont. All School Relay Championships

Last Wednesday, nine talented Vermont teams headed to Lakeside Stadium to compete at The Victorian All Schools Track Relays. Running against the best relay teams in Victoria was no easy task but Vermont put on an excellent display of athleticism. Wesley College won the overall champion of day, whilst Vermont tied for 10th with Carey and Penleigh Essendon. The highlight of the day was the speedy running from Sam G, John T, Vilo P and Bill X in the U18 4x100m team who ran an impressive 47.24 to qualify for the final where they placed 8th. Special thanks to Zoe G, Zara B, Gen O, Amelia K, Marko K and Oliver W who all filled in for teams at the last minute.

YEAR 8 ROUND ROBIN

BASKETBALL

Boys/Mixed

Last Monday on the 26th of August the Year 8 basketball teams all went to division basketball. All teams played exceedingly well, not dropping a game and the boys B’s team standing out with two games almost ending 50 points in their favour. By the end of the day all teams had the done the school proud with both A teams for the girls and boys advancing toward the next round, which will take place later in the year in mid-October.

Girls

Fantastic day at Girls Basketball! The B team had a steady day winning 2 out of 3 games. The team had excellent skills and enjoyed a day full of fun and laughter. Thank you to Ella for coaching the girls – who was able to get every player to score a goal across the day!

The A team had 2 easy wins over Highvale and Mount Waverley. The test was against Glen Waverley – who beat us out of the finals last year. The team came from being 10 points down at half time, to drawing in the dying seconds of the game. Charlotte was fouled with 0.2 seconds to go and managed to score a free throw to win the game by 1 point. Excellent efforts across the team, and now onto regionals!

HOCKEY

Boys/Mixed

Well done to the Year 8 Boys Hockey Team for their fantastic efforts at Division Hockey. A grey morning was instantly livened up with the vivacious Vermont Team carving up the hockey field. We kept Glen Waverley (last year’s victors) humble with a 0-0 draw, then Jacob W scored a sensational goal against Highvale for a 1-0 win. Whilst we won our final game of the day against Glen Waverley, goal difference unfortunately saw Mount Waverley through to EMR. Shout outs to Quin D who received compliments from the umpires for his calm and consistent passing and thank you to our captains Archie C and Kabir M for inspiring the team.

Girls

The Year 8 Girls Hockey team had retained talent and experience from last year’s Comp!

The team worked hard in training leading up to the big day with no one moment being too big for the players and team alike. Game one was a thrilling contest that saw VSC score multiple times with several players sharing the scoring duties. After a great performance and outstanding effort, the final game of the day did not go our way however the team is now mor experienced and poised to take their efforts to the next level in the intermediate Hockey event next year. Special thanks to coach Audrey for her contributions and to the team for their energy, effort and enthusiasm. I hope to see you all next year!

Mr. Malpeli

STATE SWIMMING CHAMPIONSHIPS

On Friday the 28th of February our mighty team of 6 swimmers compete at the annual SSV State Swimming Championships. From the get-go the day was filled with good vibes, including top tier karaoke on the drive in, rave music before marshalling, and most importantly an abundance of support between the students and teachers (Miss Malander & Miss Unal) as a unit.

King of the Pool (Josh C year 12) proved his excellence in the water (again), banking the majority of the school's points on the day. Josh was awarded with 2 individual gold in the U20 100m backstroke, the 400m freestyle, and rounding it out with a bronze in the 200m individual medley. We’d like to thank Josh for his extensive contribution to the school's swimming success over the years, and the way he inspires us all to reach for our goals!

Mackenzie E in year 12 also played a pivotal role in demonstrating true Vermont spirit in her first and final SSV state swimming event. Her leadership, commitment, and fabulous media/vlog production across the day empowered her peers with confidence, belief, and hunger for new personal bests and great relay times. Couldn't have done it without her!

To Josh and Mackenzie, thank you for your years of swimming service representing Vermont Secondary College. We wish you all the best for your future aquatic endeavours.

The U17G 4x50m freestyle relay (Lucy, Cherise, Annika, Millie) came away with 4th, and a 4 second personal best from state finals the previous year! The 16-20G 4x50m medley relay (Cherise, Mackenzie, Lucy, Millie) also showed promise, improving from their qualifying time at regionals and placing 7th.

Cherise N (yr11) came away with two bronze medals in the 17yr 50m fly, and 50m freestyle as well as providing significant contribution to the relays on the day. Lots of success!

Most importantly, we all extend gratitude to Miss Malander who holds the essence of Vermont’s sporting greatness in her every action. Every year she goes above and beyond to not only support our participation in school sport but fosters a wonderful team environment creating memories that we shall cherish long after high school. From driving us back to school at 5:45pm out of city traffic (in the dark, cold, and rain), supreme morning pre-race nutrition, and post-race nutrition we couldn’t ask for a better mentor to remind us of the beauty in the sports we play, and why we do them in the first place. And it shows! Out of 156 schools Vermont Secondary College placed 20th from a mere 6 students competing! (placing higher than many schools with bigger budgets, swimming pools, and regular team training). Ultimately, it's about the culture around you that manifests true success and teamwork, and to that I say there's no better place than Vermont.

EMR BOWLS

The Coles Bowls Academy (CBA) embarked on its 3rd year in the EMR Bowls Competition. After a series of trials and training sessions, the students displayed a great deal of enthusiasm and motivation to compete for the College. On Wednesday the 26th of April, the weather was superb, and it was a successful day all-round for our students and the 10 teams competing on the day. The most pleasing aspect for the competition was the fantastic sportsmanship and passion displayed on the day by our students.

The senior team of Lucas H, Ollie W & Kai T (Yr 10) fell short at the final hurdle and were beaten by Doncaster SC in the Grand Final. In the junior section, all teams were in the running to progress through to the state finals on Tuesday the 9th of May. The winning junior team consisting of Jake H (Yr. 7), Jack C & Jack H (Yr. 9) kept their composure in the Grand Final, with a gallant effort from Finn H (Yr. 9), Rani S & Aiyden C (Yr. 7) taking 2nd place. Thank you to the Heatherdale Bowls Club for their continued support of the CBA, and we look forward to many students continuing with this great sport for years to come!

The following students were successful in making the VSC Bowls team for 2023:

Year 7: Alvin C, Aiyden C, Archie C, Jake H, Jayden C, Rani S, Sherlock H, Wesley B

Year 8: Archie P, Aidan S, Evan W

EMR INTERMEDIATE BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

Well done to the Intermediate Baseball team who trained hard prior to the event last Thursday 27th April. The team had a mix of both year nine and ten students who displayed the Vermont values in their performance on the day. The pitching was fantastic with some outstanding new talent emerging in Nisith A, equally as impressive was the effort of James G behind the plate as out catcher on the day who recorded more than one out at home plate and blocked almost every ball that came his way! Unfortunately, our best effort was not enough to help us advance to the next level, but your coaches Ms Arthur and Mr Malpeli could not be prouder of the effort on the day! We encourage all of the year nine students to join the team next year and the year ten students to consider joining the senior team next year! Thanks for a great day out team!

EMR INTERMEDIATE GIRLS' SOFTBALL

The intermediate girls played really well going two wins and two losses. The girls played well despite their captain being away. Taya C and Tori B stepped up and pitched for the team as the captain was away. Unfortunately, the girls did not advance to the state, however their teacher was extremely proud of their effort and sportsmanship. I encourage all students next year to try out for softball next year!

EMR SENIOR BOYS/MIXED BASEBALL

The Senior Baseball Team came into the EMR finals full of confidence having played together for many years prior. With the bats alive and some impressive fielding, Vermont SC got off to a great start with a win in our first game against Ringwood SC. Unfortunately, this winning streak did not last long as we were beaten by John Monash Science School with their pitcher throwing very well and therefore keeping our bats quiet! From this point forward, we were hopeful of finishing our final games strongly and this was illustrated by stellar performances against East Doncaster SC and Balwyn High. Finishing 2nd in the region, our students were more than competitive throughout the day, and all played an important role whether that be in the field or with the bat. Fortunately for this group, we have been invited to the State Finals on Tuesday the 23rd of May at Cheltenham Baseball Club.
