What's Happening in the F/1 Classroom?
We have spent this fortnight looking at the long & short /a/ sounds in Literacy. The children identified that the long a sound, is the same as the letter name. The students have brainstormed words for each of the sounds, completed sorting activities, written sentences with words containing each /a/ sound & even went on a scavenger hunt around the classroom finding words & identifying if it had the long or short vowel sound.
In Maths we have been looking at Subtraction. The children quickly made the connection that it is opposite to Addition, which we learnt about last term & enjoyed using animals & counters to model subtraction. We are beginning to learn about the symbol for subtraction and how to write an equation accurately. Our grade 1 students have been looking at 2 digit subtraction, using their knowledge of place value to help solve their equations.
We have been working on pieces for our Art Show, which will be held on November15-17th, at the Mechanics Hall. The students have been looking at lines & contrasting colours to create a hand print piece, as well as an ‘optical illusion’.
