FUELLING UP WITH THE HEALTH DEPARTMENT

With what can only be described as ‘hitting the ground running’, 2024 has started with a bang! Parents and families are incredibly busy with work and life and students are trying to fit so many aspects of their lives into very limited time. As a result, opportunities for self-care are becoming fewer and fewer.

The Health faculty would like to remind our whole community that it is vital to find opportunities, no matter how brief it is to take a minute to ‘breathe’, take a minute to talk with family members. This might mean a conversation in the car on the way to training or speaking to your child about school, friendships or what is going on in their world.

Nutrition is a key factor in the development and behaviour of our students. With adolescence being such a rapid growth period and as well as the countless hours of sport and hobbies, it is important to provide plenty of fuel to allow them to remain healthy and ready to take in the new experiences and learning opportunities on offer.

Cooking at home provides the perfect opportunity to spend time together, build confidence and valuable life skills. In Year 10 Food Studies here at McKinnon, students develop an understanding about food access, cuisines, and cooking techniques. A key component of the course is to get students to think about how to work with produce to get the best results.

Included is a favourite amongst the Year 10s. This dish is simple to put together, fun and we encourage students to change and adapt the recipe/s to suit tastes. The protein in the meatballs is so important for development while the flatbread offers complex carbohydrates. (if time is short the pita pockets are a great alternative).
