CAPTAIN'S CORNER

SENIOR CAPTAIN

As we reach the halfway point of Term 1, the environment around the school is great. It’s amazing to see that everyone has left off from where they were last year in terms of a positive attitude. I know I for one am very glad to be back in the school environment after the summer holidays.

On Friday 23 February, three of the School Captains, including myself, attended a leadership conference at St Leonards College. This was a day filled with lectures, workshops and most importantly interacting with leaders from other schools. The lectures were amazing, as they had high level leaders such as Zoe Daniels discussing what makes a good leader and the different ways in which people lead.

The workshops consisted of us working with the other school leaders and partaking in activities. During this time, we also got to discuss with these leaders about the changes they want to make at their schools. Overall, it was a very insightful day into leadership, and aided in preparing us for our new roles at McKinnon. Furthermore, it was great to talk to all the other people that are in the same position as us, as leaders of their respective schools.

School life is so busy at the moment. Nevertheless, McKinnon is thriving. While Year 12 comes with many stresses there are many events happening at the moment: both Year 11 and 12 formals, the recent Swimming Carnival, as well as the House Music Competition coming up. Each of these events have such a history behind them, which everyone embraces with open arms. I have loved what this year has offered so far to students, and can’t wait to see what direction this year takes us all in.

As a student at McKinnon, I have had some of the best experiences of my life here. From amazing camps to wonderful friends and teachers, I have truly cherished every moment. I have been provided opportunities as a student council member and now deputy school captain and I feel so lucky to be able to express myself and work hard in such a supportive environment. I have also been part of various music programs such as choir and learning a new instrument. It's helped me grow as a person and I'm so grateful for it!
