Spanish Club

Monday 24th March.

This week, Marta and Nicole are leading the workshop "Gaudí: Manos a la obra." Students will learn about the artist and create their own Gaudí-inspired masterpieces.

Last week, our wonderful teacher Nerida took center stage with the support of Veni, practicing her Spanish with enthusiasm. Inspired by the importance of protecting our creeks, students created beautiful drawings while the adults decided on a message to summarise what we learned. In the coming weeks, these artworks and the message will be transformed into posters and displayed in shops and childcare centers, helping to raise awareness about the importance of caring for our waterways.

Students and parents alike were surprised to learn that:

  • We have lots of creatures that live in the nearby Edgars and Merri Creeks, like caddisflies, damselflies, frogs, eels, turtles, birds, and more ...... but they're affected by the pollution and litter that goes down the stormwater drains in the street
  • Stormwater isn't filtered like the water that goes down the pipes in our houses and schools. It gets contaminated not just with litter but with oil, paint, fertiliser, dog poo, car wash detergent and more - anything that can get washed down the drains in our streets.
  • If we keep cleaning up our creeks and stop contaminating the stormwater, we may see the return of the ornitorinco (platypus)!

The learnings and some images used were thanks to a grant from Darebin City Council that enabled us to have two incursions/excursions last year to learn about our waterways and to do some stencilling in the school and local shops. Have you seen these stencils around? Try to spot two in the school and two in the shops!

Talking about posters.... Are you loving the amazing poster on our cover, created by Alberto? We certainly are! 💛 Thanks, Alberto!
