Teaching and Learning
This Term was packed with exciting opportunities for learning and engagement! Our Year 7 - 9 students explored key historical events, including World War I, World War II, and the Holocaust, with visits to The Shrine of Remembrance and The Melbourne Holocaust Museum. In Health, students developed well-being strategies and learned about stress management techniques. Maths and Numeracy students tackled real-world financial literacy projects, such as trip budgeting and café management. PE classes stayed active with agility and coordination games at the North Melbourne Recreation Centre.
Meanwhile, our VET students honed their skills in hospitality, visual arts, and salon training. Finally, our Outdoor Recreation group embarked on an adventurous trip to 15 Mile Creek, participating in canoeing, zip-lining, and stargazing. With so much having taken place, we look forward to even more exciting events ahead!
Professional Learning
Staff have utilised their weekly meetings this term work to work through two three-week professional learning cycles in teams. The aim is to develop staff capacity in classroom instruction and wellbeing.
The first professional learning cycle focused on the link between trauma, mental health and neurodivergence. We identified and understood the interconnections between neurodiversity, trauma, and mental health and the factors that shape how students learn, interact, and regulate emotions, and how these may manifest in the school environment. The adjustments we make to accommodate different needs in the classroom (with a polyvagal lens).
The second professional learning cycle focused on the explicit instruction element of our responsive instruction model. Staff unpacked Rosenshine's research on the principles of instruction. We developed our understanding of explicit instruction and worked through best practice for delivering the key knowledge, understanding, and skills required for success in each lesson.
