Around the Junior School

Year 5’s experience in the Senior School

Thursday 27 March

Year 5 students visited the Senior School with Mrs Gibson to participate in a hands-on science experiment designed to deepen their understanding of animal adaptations. As part of the activity, students explored the insulating properties of blubber by placing lard into a glove, which they then wore on one hand. Both hands were subsequently immersed in a bucket of ice water, allowing students to compare the difference in temperature sensation. This practical experience effectively demonstrated how blubber functions as insulation, supporting and extending their classroom learning on physical adaptations in animals.

Art

Kindergarten have been tuning into their surroundings for the second half of this term and looking at the seasons. Discussions around symbols and imagery for each of the seasons have been had and used to create a series of artworks. The latest pieces of art have been lanterns created to represent a season with familiar images and colours made with oil pastels, acrylic wash and crepe paper. A visual delight!

House Muster

Year 6 House Leaders organized a fantastic House Muster on Friday 4 April. They have been working with their House Mentor during Round Square workshop sessions to prepare for the afternoon. They have been developing their communication, teamwork and leadership skills in order to run a successful experience for the rest of the Junior School.

Students from Kindergarten to Year 5 participated in a range of activities run by the Year 6 students, including dodgeball, tag, hoola hoop scissor paper rock, survivor tag, bullrush, totem tennis, red light green light and an obstacle course. The afternoon finished with marching practice for all the Houses in preparation for the athletics carnival next term.

Our Year 6 students did a superb job of preparing and setting up for the activities on the day and were wonderful when they were giving instructions and leading the other students through the activities. Their House Mentors were very proud of their efforts and the students should be proud of themselves, too.

A marvelous afternoon was enjoyed by all!

Year 6 Excursion - Sustainable Farming Unit

Year 6 embarked on a fantastic learning experience that supported their ' Sustainable Farming' Science unit this term. To support their classroom and lab experiences, students had the opportunity to visit a working farm in Wellington and test their knowledge with the Smith family, one of our wonderful School families. The day was filled with lots of questions and even a chance to test their wool classing skills—something Kinross Wolaroi School offered back in the 1920s.
