Animals of Australia - Y3

This term, students in Y3 are embarking on an exciting learning journey exploring koalas and other iconic Australian animals. Through a variety of creative and educational experiences, students are developing a deeper understanding of the unique features, habitats and conservation needs of these remarkable creatures.

Students are currently participating in engaging art activities, creating vibrant artworks featuring koalas and other native Australian animals. These hands-on experiences are encouraging students to observe closely, appreciate the distinctive characteristics of Australian wildlife and express their creativity.

In Science lessons, students are investigating the special adaptations and features of Australian animals. Through experiments and scientific explorations, they are learning how animals such as kangaroos, echidnas, and platypuses survive in different Australian habitats. These activities are promoting critical thinking and helping students develop a greater appreciation for biodiversity and the natural environment.

As part of their literacy learning, students are researching their chosen Australian animal using books and reliable online resources. They are also watching documentaries to gain visual insights into animal behaviours, habitats and conservation challenges. Using their research, students are organising information and writing information reports, building their confidence in using scientific vocabulary and presenting factual information in clear, structured texts.

This unit is continuing to provide valuable opportunities for students to strengthen their observation, research, creativity and communication skills while developing a deeper connection with Australia’s unique wildlife.

Wombat Stew - Y2

This term, we have begun an exciting new unit exploring Australian animals. As part of our learning, we read the story Wombat Stew together. To bring the story to life, we headed outside and created our own “wombat stew” using natural materials such as leaves and gumnuts. The students showed wonderful creativity and enjoyed working together as a team.

Australian Animals

Y1 has been learning all about Australian animals. We made some cute koalas and learnt how to write a sentence to describe their size, how they move, their colour and the sounds they make by using adjectives and adverbs to make our sentences more interesting, for example: the big, slow, brown, and furry koala was quietly eating some gum leaves.
