Principal's Ponderings

From our Principal - Mr Chad Smit

One School, One Globe, One Lord

As we move through our second week of Term 2, our school community finds itself in a unique and deeply meaningful season. Learning is not only confined to one place. Instead, it is unfolding across different regions, cultures, and even nations, for our DCS students.

Here in Devonport, students have returned to familiar rhythms of classroom life, relationships, and learning. At the same time, a group of our students are in Alice Springs, engaging with indigenous communities, listening, serving, and learning from stories and perspectives that broaden their understanding of people and place. Further still, in the Philippines, another group of Year 10 students, is immersed in a completely different cultural context, partnering with local ministries, connecting with communities, and experiencing the richness of God’s global Church.

While these experiences differ greatly in setting, they are united in purpose.

Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 12:12 that though the body has many parts, it is still one body. This is a powerful picture for our community at this time. Though geographically dispersed, we remain deeply connected. We are one school, learning in different environments, yet shaped by the same values, the same calling, and the same faith.

What is especially significant in this season is the shared encounter with God across these different places. In Tasmania, in the Northern Territory, and in the Philippines, our students and staff are worshiping the same God. His presence is not limited by geography. His Spirit is at work in every classroom, every conversation, and every act of service.

This reflects the broader truth of God’s Kingdom. Revelation 7:9 paints a picture of a great multitude from every nation, tribe, people, and language, united in worship before Him. What our students are experiencing now is, in many ways, a glimpse of that reality. Different cultures, different expressions, yet one shared faith and one shared Lord.

There is something profoundly shaping in this. It lifts our perspective beyond our immediate context and reminds us that we are part of something far greater than ourselves. Faith is not confined to one place or one way of expression. It is alive and active across the world, expressed through diverse communities who all love and serve Jesus.

Psalm 24:1 reminds us that the earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it. Every place our students are learning and serving right now belongs to Him. This truth gives great confidence. Wherever we go, God is already there. Wherever we serve, He is at work. Wherever we worship, He is present.

As a community, this season invites us to reflect on the unity we share in Christ. Though separated by distance, we remain connected through Him. We continue to grow together, learn together, and serve together, even when that learning and serving takes place in different parts of the world.

In the coming weeks, as students return, they will bring more than stories. They will bring insight, compassion, and a broader understanding of God’s people. Their experiences will enrich our whole community, strengthening our shared identity and deepening our collective faith.

Ephesians 4:4–6 reminds us that there is one body and one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, and one God and Father of all. This is the foundation of our unity. It is what holds us together, whether we are in Devonport, Alice Springs, or the Philippines.

It is a privilege to belong to a community that not only learns together, but also grows in understanding of God’s global family. To worship Him, to serve Him, and to love His people, no matter where we are in the world.

Wholeheartedly,

Chad
