Level 3 & 4

Wow! We are heading into Week 5 already, doesn’t time fly!

We have a number of Grade 4 students heading off to Regional Cross Country this week and we wish them all the best – give it your personal best guys!

This week we are celebrating Education Week, and we would love for all families to join us in celebrating everything that makes our school so special! Our celebration will be held on Thursday afternoon from 2:45pm, and we hope to see you there!

We are looking forward to our upcoming excursion to the Melbourne Museum! As we are travelling by train, we require many helpers to make this experience smooth and safe. If you are able to join us for this exciting experience, please use this link to express your interest: https://forms.gle/ce57biTSMKkQtN1Y6. A notice for this excursion has been pushed to you via Sentral.

CURRICULUM

Spelling

Following on from our focus on Silent Final E (SFE) Job 3…we are moving on to SFE Job 4! We know that SFE has a lot of jobs and Job 4 says Every Syllable Needs a Vowel (even in really long words!)

Reading

In Reading, we will continue to explore our mentor text ‘Seasons’ by Aunty Munya Andrews and Charmaine Ledden-Lewis. We are now moving into deepening our understanding of the differences between changing the season using static dates and using environmental indicators to fluidly move through seasons with no set length.

Writing

In Writing, continuing our focus on information texts, the students are still working on their information text focusing on the Kimberly Region, they are completing their research and beginning to put this into a presentable format.

To support your child's literacy at home, you might read do some research to explore the Kimberly Region. Encourage your child to notice the topic specific language that is used to describe the region, for example landmarks, flora and fauna.

Maths

In Mathematics, Grade 3 students will continue focusing on multiplication and division. We will build and further develop the student’s understanding of multiplication and division factors and using arrays and visual tools to solve worded problems.

We encourage students to practice their times tables. Try saying your times tables out loud, writing them down, or asking someone to quiz you. There is also Multiverse on Mathletics that can be a fun interactive way to practice.

Students in Grade 4 will continue working with decimals. They will consolidate their understanding of the connections between whole numbers, fractions and decimals and their purpose. This will include work on using tenths and hundredths, and comparing, ordering and renaming decimals.

At home, you can help your child learn decimals by practising with money, measuring, and everyday activities. Ask them to read prices while shopping, measure objects with a ruler or compare numbers with decimals. Regular practice will help build confidence and understanding of decimals in real-life situations.

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

In Week 5 our Challenge Based Learning will continue to center around the guiding questions, ‘What does Country mean to Aboriginal people?’ We will expand our understanding of Indigenous seasons by comparing the seasons identified in our mentor text with those of our local lands. We will highlight the different environmental factors that influence the seasons changing in different areas of Australia.

At home, you can support your child’s understanding by having conversations about what environmental factors you can see around the local area that could be used to influence a season changing.

Wellbeing

SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

We are encouraging students to “Be a Learner” and consider how they can make the most of their learning time. By using our time wisely, we can ensure we are getting the most important things done first, before we move on to other tasks. This is a great topic for personal organisation and independence skills.
