Year 6 News

Mathematics

During our mathematic lessons this term, the students have been learning to convert between common metric units of length, mass and capacity; choose and use decimal representations of metric measurements relevant to the context of a problem.

As well as,  measure, calculate and compare elapsed time; interpret and use timetables and itineraries to plan activities and determine the duration of events and journeys. To maintain fluency with their multiplications, the year 6s have been completing daily multiplication reviews.

Our next focus will be to review arrays and factors to build understanding of prime and composite numbers.

Literacy

Coming to the end of our text study on Skellig, by David Almond, the students wrote a scene from the book, from another character’s perspective. We then concluded the study with a viewing of “Skellig: The Owl-man” to compare between the novel and film.

To support their writing, our punctuation lessons focused on when and where to use the comma in our writing. Finally, we have been looking at the prefix ‘mal’ and ‘contr/counter during our grammar lessons.

Our next text study will be on the picture book “The Lost Thing” by Shaun Tan. This unit will explore the differences and similarities between the short film and book.

Dialogue Writing Samples

This week, our Year 6 students have been crafting narrative stories with a strong focus on dialogue and punctuation accuracy. Below is a showcase of some outstanding work.

“OUCH!”, Ed screamed.

“I bruised myself!”

“We have to keep running!”, shouted Henry.

They keep going as the automatic chopping board seems to have malware caused by a hacker. Once they get through the back door they hide.

“Quickly, lets hide behind that pot before he catches us!”, Henry yelled.

“That’s a good idea!”, yelled Ed.

They suddenly found a hole behind the pot, they had no time to waste so they headed inside the hole.

“What are you doing” he snapped.

Andrew just ignored him and walked towards me.

“Are you ok?” he asked.

“No” I snapped.

“Here I’ll help you up”

I ignored him and got up myself.

“Why are you so angry you brought this on yourself”

‘Zac? Are you awake?’  whispers Mum through the door.

‘Yep, Mum I’m just getting changed in here, hold on.’  I answer back.

‘I have something I need to tell you.’  Says mum in a deep voice.

‘Yeah, mum what is it? What is the news?’

‘In your grand final today, you’ll be playing with 2 players!’

‘SAY WHAT! TWO PLAYERS!’ I yell loudly.

This week, our Year 6 students had a wonderful opportunity to work alongside their Year 1 buddies on a special Mother's Day activity.

The older students helped their younger peers complete their origami cards. They also listened to their buddies read their take home reader.

It was heartwarming to see the patience and enthusiasm Year 6 displayed as they supported their buddies, a perfect example of our school community working together! The Year 1 students absolutely loved the one-on-one attention, and our Year 6 students gained valuable experience in mentoring and literacy support.

We plan to make this a regular activity moving forward.
