Term Three and Homework Routines
It has been good to see the students back in the Middle Years Centre for the last two weeks, they have been enthusiastic but settled in their classes. Term Three is an exciting time for Middle Years students. The Year 7s are becoming more familiar with the routines and expectations of the Senior Campus and have transitioned well into their secondary schooling. The Year 8s are all looking forward to the Mittagundi Winter Experience, but with a little nervousness about the cold. The Year 9s are most excited about their Vietnam Experience at the end of the term. Along with the musical, Mamma Mia! and our House Music festival, Middle Years students should be looking forward to a busy, yet fun Term Three.
With all of the upcoming events, getting into a good routine with homework is vital to successful learning at school. Having an effective homework routine is important to allow students to revisit and consolidate what they have learnt during the school day. An effective homework routine helps students become more autonomous and competent in their own learning along with helping them develop perseverance when challenges arise.
An effective homework routine involves:
Having a regular and realistic time for homework to be completed.
Minimising distractions - Turn off your phones. DO NOT have phones in the same space that you are studying. Study in a quiet area alone and without interruptions. Sit at a tidy desk etc.
Focusing on one task at a time. Our brains are inefficient at multitasking.
Studying in short sessions of 25-30 minutes, then have a short break and study for another 25-30 minutes (but make sure you come back for the next session!)
An effective study routine allows for students to make efficient use of their time and helps create positive habits for the future.
I hope the Middle Years students are really looking forward to all that awaits them in Term Three and we are here to assist them if they require support or guidance on their study processes.
