Year 5 & 6

Around our level

During the last two weeks of Term 2, we had some very special events!

We were thrilled to welcome players from the Hawthorn Hawks AFL Women’s team to our school. The students were excited to hear firsthand what it’s like to play in the AFLW, with the players sharing inspiring stories about their journeys, training routines, and the importance of teamwork and resilience. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to ask questions and learn about the world of professional sport.

Our whole-school Indonesian Day was a fantastic celebration of culture and learning, with students taking part in a variety of fun and engaging activities. Dressing up in colourful Indonesian masks, the children explored traditions of Indonesia through creative colouring activities and hands-on learning. They also discovered fascinating facts about Indonesian geography, customs, and language, deepening their appreciation for our neighbouring country. It was a vibrant day filled with curiosity and cultural connection!

In a burst of colour and creativity, our students were very excited to come to school dressed in “100 Shades of Colour” on the last day of Term 2. The students sported a large range of colours, very interesting outfits, and imaginative hairstyles.

Look out for our next newsletter in which our students will cover Hoop Time and activities back at school for those students who didn’t attend.

Take a moment to enjoy reading student recounts from these amazing events.

5/6A

In the last week of term, the AFLW players from Hawthorn came. We had the year 3/4 classes come down and we all sat in the B.E.R and waited for the players. When the players came, they told us about their careers and we asked them questions. Then they told us a quiz, some people got prizes and people got things signed.

Today I’m going to tell you about crazy hair and colour day. In the morning I picked my outfit, and got dressed into it. When I got to school I saw everyone had cool outfits and crazy hair. We took group photos and it was a fun day with all my friends.

- Summer N

I liked the activities that were planned for us for Indonesian day. We all made Indonesian masks and had a photo in the photo booth. After that, we watched a video showing us the rules for the Indonesian sport. We then split up into groups. The year 5s went to the Prep buddies and the year 6s played the game on the basketball court.

On the last week of term, my favourite thing was when the amazing AFLW players told us about their backstory and how they got to where they are. They told us some awesome tips on how to get better. We also got to ask some questions, like what is the most goals you had in a game, who has played the most games and much more. They were so kind and respectful.

5/6B

It was a big surprise when the AFLW girls came to visit. They were really nice and had really great answers to all of our questions. My favourite part was when we had to answer their questions to win a prize. Indonesian day was also fun! We got to see our buddies, do activities with them and watch a story on the TV.

In the last week of Term 2, we had a plentiful array of activities and celebrations. On Tuesday, we were visited by the AFLW Hawthorn team. We had a Q and A session leading into a quiz about what we learned about them to try to win a footy themed prizes. After they left, we got signed photos and posters. On Thursday, we had Indonesian Day. We coloured in masks and played Blookets on the TV, as well as doing some research. I had lots of fun playing Sepak Takraw, though it was very hard. The day after was 100 Shades of Colour Day, as well as the final day of Term 2. We couldn't really do anything because there was no internet, therefore we couldn't print anything or do anything on our chromebooks. It was chaos! There were chess boards and pieces as well as paper everywhere. But in the end it was a very fun week!

I liked the crazy hair and colour day, because I didn't have to wear my school uniform. I also liked it because it was the last day of Term 2. But on that day, it was quite boring because we didn't do much fun stuff because the internet was down. The Indonesian Day was fun because I got to wear the Indonesian mask.

On the last day of Term 2, Yarra Road Primary School had our Crazy Hair / 100 Days of Colour Day! It was super fun because we got to dress up in crazy coloured clothes and make our hair crazy and decorative, too. When I arrived at school, everyone was in such crazy colours and they all looked brilliant! Overall it was an awesome day!

5/6C

On the 30th of June the AFLW Hawthorn team came to our school and spoke to us about their fitness, training, how many goals they have scored in their career, and much more. We were allowed to ask one question each and we also had a time at the end where they asked us a few questions about them and if you got it right, you got a prize. We also got a poster with all of the players on it, or you could get a sheet with all of their signatures. I enjoyed meeting them all and finding out a bit of what they do outside of playing AFL.

- Ada D

Indonesian Day included lots of things but for me, the standout was when we played sport. It was Sepak Takraw. It is basically volleyball but with soccer rules. You can only use your feet and legs, and occasionally your forehead. I really enjoyed it. We started off practising with balloons in the gym and I did four bicycle kicks and three of them were successful. Later, we did actual Sepak Takraw outside on the two basketball courts; and it really was worthwhile!

This year's crazy hair and colour day was definitely one to remember. We all dressed up in bright colours and crazy hair. My hair was sprayed pink. For my outfit, I wore a bright blue top, a bright yellow tutu, pink fairy wings and a pink cowboy hat. Unfortunately, we had no internet for the whole day, which made things harder, especially because we had quite a bit of finishing off to do, on the chromebooks. But Mrs Haysom had a backup plan. Crazy hair and colour day was also the last day of school, so we got off early. When we got to school, it was really cool because there were colourful balloons and backdrops to take photos in front of. Overall this day was a 10 out of 10

The last week of term was a fun week filled with all our favourite things. Thursday and Friday were of course the best though. First was Indonesian Day. It was so fun when we arrived at school we started to work on our Indonesian masks. They were so fun to make and I was so proud of mine. After that we went to the photo booth which was a blast! We all got to take photos with these cool masks and items and had the best time! We all walked back to our classrooms and worked on Indonesian word searches or coloring sheets.
