Around Our Level
Welcome back to everyone. We hope you all had a relaxing and enjoyable break. Term 3 certainly is going to be full of lots of exciting activities as we get ready to celebrate our 100 Years of Yarra Road Primary School.
Last term, we celebrated ‘100 Shades of Colour’, showcasing crazy hairstyles and colourful clothing. A big thank you to our wonderful Parents Association for organising such a fun day. It really was a fantastic way to finish the term on such a high.
We also had lots of fun celebrating ‘Indonesian Day’. Students in Prep had the chance to dress up in sarongs and wear a typical school uniform. We compared how Indonesion school uniform is different to our school uniform and why. We also had the opportunity to work with our Buddies and to learn about orangutans and the destruction of their habitats due to deforestation. The students made an orangutan and decorated it using wool. We learned about where Indonesia is located, its climate, population, and its flag. A big thank you to Ibu Grogan for organising such an amazing day of activities.
This week in Literacy, we have been learning about the sounds that ‘y’ and ‘x’ make, as well as learning to write these in both upper and lower case. We are now focussing on the sounds that ‘qu/kw’ and ‘z’ make.
In Writing, we are beginning our unit on ‘Poetry’. We will be learning to create list poems, shape poems, feelings poems, and acrostic poems.
In Maths, we are commencing our unit on numbers 11 to 20. These are called our "teen numbers". Our focus will be on recognising teen numbers, ordering and sequencing numbers, and writing our numbers to 20 correctly. This week we completed number searches looking for different teen numbers and used the number generator to see which numbers were rolled the most.
In Geography, we have been learning about special places, what they are, and why they are important. We will be sharing stories about our special places and spending time in them either by ourselves or with our loved ones.
Last Friday, we celebrated ‘100 Days of School’ in Prep, which is an amazing achievement. Students came to school dressed in a special outfit/costume representing the number 100. We played games, read stories, completed a special 100 Days of School activity booklet, counted to 100, had a special morning tea, and performed 100 exercises.
Congratulations to all our Prep students on this very special milestone.
