What's Happening in the Middle School

Year 3
What’s Happening in Year 3 in Weeks 5 and 6
Over the past few weeks, our Year 3 students have been involved in some wonderful learning experiences and discussions. Recently, we had a visit focused on Cyber Safety, where students learned three important rules to help them stay safe online:
- I protect my personal details online.
- People I only know on the internet are strangers.
- I talk to a trusted adult if I have an online problem.
We also enjoyed a Book Week performance by Meerkat Productions, based on the nominated picture story book The Garden of Broken Things. The students were captivated by the live theatre and loved asking questions afterwards. The beautiful message of the story reminded us that sometimes, just saying “hello” can change someone’s day.
Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:
Wellbeing
- We are learning about how to be a good role model
We are learning to understand and recognise positive/negative role models
Literacy
- We will continue to learn about prefixes and suffixes
- We will review our learning on prefixes and suffixes
- We are learning to develop our note-taking skills
- We are working on developing our skills to create detailed, informative paragraphs for our information reports
In the coming weeks, we will be going to apply our knowledge of information reports and begin to write our own on a topic of our choice. If children have a topic they are interested in, it would be a great idea to begin some research at home to supplement their work at school
Maths
- We will be continuing to develop our knowledge on time and applying it to help us understand and create our own daily/weekly timetable
We will also begin to look at 3D objects – identifying their properties and naming them
Knowledge Unit
- Year 3 will take part in an incursion using interactive visuals and hands-on activities to teach them about healthy eating, body systems, nutrition, and well-being, including food tasting!
We will begin to look at the importance of food safety
Reminders
- Year 3 will be visiting CERES in Week 7. Please ensure you have paid/consented. Listed below are some reminders from CERES:
Remember to:
- Pack nude food lunches
- Adults bring your Keep Cups for coffee, we do not have takeaway cups available
- Check the weather and remind students to dress appropriately (hat, raincoat etc.) as you will be outside
- Your children should have brought home a form for Y3 camp. Please ensure this is filled in and returned by Friday 22nd August.
The Year 3 students thoroughly enjoyed their in school performance by Meerkat Productions showing their adaptation of the nominated book The Garden of broken things by Freya Blackwood. The performance taught us "How one small hello can grow and grow" displaying the importance of engaging with all different people in our community.
Year 4
What’s Happening in Year 4 in Weeks 5 and 6
Last week, the Year 4 students attended a Cyber Safety Workshop that emphasised the importance of safety when participating in anything online. The presenter enforced using strategies that protected our identities as well as the importance of always talking to their parents or a trusted adult if they felt uneasy or worried about something they have seen or heard on the internet.
Over the next two weeks, we will be learning about:
Wellbeing
Students will be continuing to listen to and discuss the “Grow Your Mindset’ podcast. The following two weeks will include discussions around joy as well as how to deliver an authentic apology.
Literacy
Our spelling program, Word Origins, will continue to be implemented throughout the second semester. Writing sessions will be focusing on information texts to support our subject area of science in Term 3. Our mentor texts for the entire term will continue to be written by Australian author, Jess McGeachin. With a focus on fluency and accuracy, students will be reading non-fiction texts. Students will also be writing their own information texts, using visual scaffolds to assist them when forming their paragraphs.
Maths
The Year 4 students will be reviewing and building on their knowledge of fractions. This will include fractions of shape, fraction location on a number line as well as fractions of quantity. All areas of Maths that were studied throughout the first semester will also be frequently reviewed to facilitate deeper understanding of concepts.
Knowledge Unit
Our Knowledge Unit in Term 3 will be ‘Science’. Students will be learning about simple physics such as forces as well as studying the impact of food chains in the living world.
Homework
The Year 4 students are expected to read every night and record their progress in their personal diaries. It is the responsibility of the student to bring their diary to school every day and take it home each night to log their reading. Classroom teachers will be checking and signing these diaries regularly to monitor student reading habits. The student diary will also be used to highlight important dates and reminders.
Important Year 4 Dates:
Tuesday September 2nd – Taskworks Incursion
Friday September 19th – Last Day of Term 3 2:30pm dismissal
