Great Wheelbarrow Race Assembly

During our Week 2 assembly, we proudly celebrated the outstanding results of our Great Wheelbarrow Race teams. This included the presentation of our fundraising donation to the Mareeba Hospital Foundation – an incredible $8,845.68 raised by our students over the course of the year.

Students presented the cheque to Mareeba Hospital Foundation volunteers, Mrs. Patty Crothers and Mrs. Rita Conroy, who expressed their heartfelt thanks for the College’s generosity and hard work. We were also honoured to receive 100 teddy bears from Mrs. Plozza, affectionately known as “Teddy Bear Nonna,” to be donated to the hospital through our teams.

As a College, we extend our sincere thanks to all of our sponsors whose contributions made this opportunity possible for our students. During the assembly, we also recognised and presented gifts to the amazing students, staff, and volunteers who made the 2025 Great Wheelbarrow Race such a success – a small token of our appreciation for their exceptional efforts.

District Track & Field Success

Following Augustine House’s victory at our College Athletics Carnival, our students carried their momentum into the District

Track and Field Carnival. Many achieved podium finishes in

their chosen events, with several students earning the

prestigious title of Overall Age Champion.

A special mention goes to Ryan Harrison, who became the fastest male over 100m in the district with an impressive time of 11.64 seconds. These outstanding results, coupled with the high level of participation from all students, led to St Stephen’s Catholic College winning the Overall Championship Carnival Trophy.

We are incredibly proud of our students and wish them every success as they prepare to represent the Tablelands District at the upcoming Peninsula Trials on 24–25 August in Cairns.

Extra-Curricular Sporting Highlights

Earlier in the term, our Year 8 Boys Rugby League team travelled to Cairns to compete in a regional competition. Despite often coming up against much larger opponents, the boys showed great determination, teamwork, and skill.

In other extra-curricular news, our Senior Cricket Team recently competed in the Streetsmart Cricket Tournament, facing Cairns’ top side. After an outstanding victory over St Andrews Catholic College, our team has advanced to the next round, where they will take on Townsville in Tully. We wish them all the best for this exciting challenge ahead.

We are also excited to see our Junior Mixed Team competing each Wednesday afternoon in the Allan Rockley Touch competition. This weekly fixture has been a great opportunity for students to further develop their skills and enjoy competitive game play versing other Tablelands schools.

Looking ahead, we have Touch Football to close out the term on a high note, with both Senior and Junior teams set to compete at Smithfield. We look forward to seeing our students once again represent the College with pride, sportsmanship, and determination.
