JCU Heroes in Science Program
by Charlotte Agnew
Over the term 2 holidays the three of us (Charlotte Agnew, Summer Richardson and Tom Fenner) got the opportunity to attend the JCU heroes in science program. The program, hosted at the Cairns branch of the university, took and accepted applications from across the far north giving students from across the region the chance to travel to their campus to immerse ourselves in the sciences of ecology, botany and zoology.
During the 2-day program we got to meet and make friends with many other students with a keen interest in science, whilst getting hands-on knowledge and experience with what a career in science entails, in the labs and herbarium of their Cairns Campus and the amazing facilities at the Daintree Rainforest Observatory, which included a 50 meter canopy crane and a combination of natural biodiversity as well as ongoing conservation and experimental projects.
Overall, it was a blast, giving us valuable insight, the chance to meet great new people, and a renewed sense of wonder for the natural world!
