Grade 3

English

In recent weeks, the Grade 3 students have shifted their reading focus towards understanding our system of law-making and government. They have explored the differences between laws, rules, and customs, while also comparing different forms of government, including democracy, monarchy, and communism. In writing, the students have continued to strengthen their ability to plan and produce well-structured informative paragraphs, drawing on a range of topics from their reading.

Mathematics

In recent weeks, students have completed their second unit on multiplication and division strategies. They have made strong progress in using bar models to represent both operations and have been applying a range of strategies to solve worded problems.

Last week, the focus shifted to angles, with students exploring right angles and identifying examples in the world around them. This week, they will begin a new unit on time, learning to read an analogue clock to the nearest five minutes, including ‘quarter to’ and ‘quarter past’. Students will also compare analogue and digital time, while solving problems that involve different units of time.

Inquiry

As the end-of-term 150 Year Celebration approaches, students are busily preparing for the Grade 3 exhibition: 150 Years, 150 Facts. Each student is creating a “fact flap” featuring two facts about the history of Barwon Heads and the school. Together, these will form a display of 150 facts to mark 150 years of our school’s story.

In addition, students are putting the finishing touches on their bollards, which will form part of the whole-school bollard display.
