Grade 1

Explore the Learning in Grade 1

English

The Grade 1s will continue to work on their Core Knowledge unit, ‘Astronomy.’ To complement this, they will also be exploring the poem, 'The Star.'

Students will explore questions such as:

  • What is true about the moon, and what did people long ago only imagine or make up?
  • What made the first trip to the moon brave, and how did scientists help astronauts get ready for it?
  • How did people begin to explore space, and what was it like for the first astronauts?

In Syntax and Grammar, students will be learning about writing sentences that begin with a subordinating conjunction, such as 'before' or 'after'. They will also be taught vocabulary words, including 'blazing, appearance, launch.'

Mathematics

Students will be learning about arrays, patterns, 2-digit subtraction (no regrouping) and sharing arrays (no remainders). They are also exploring area (measuring with informal units), statistics and time (o'clock and half past).

This term, we will also be focusing on the history of Barwon Heads as we celebrate 150 years of Barwon Heads Primary School. In Weeks 7, 8 and 9 the students will be working on their items for the 150 Years Exhibition.
