F-2
This term, we are beginning our Engineering journey. Last week, we found out what engineering means and what engineers do. We discussed the engineering process and discussed what some of the jobs of engineers are. There are even toy engineers! The Foundation students coloured an engineer and wrote a sentence about what engineers do. The 1/2 students planned and built the tallest towers using only 20 cups. They had to work together, working on their critical thinking skills that focussed on balance and stability.
Year 3-6
This fortnight, the 3-6 students learnt about what engineers do, the process and the roles and responsibilities they have in their careers. We had an engineering word find challenge that taught all the new vocabulary needed to be learnt. The 3/4s in the second week, worked in small groups to build the tallest tower using their critical thinking skills. They worked in a small group and all liaised on how to create it. They had 5 minutes prediction and planning time and ten minutes to build. We then did a blind fold build! So tricky!
The 5/6s were introduced to the engineering process. We discussed many different engineering careers and "the big 6" engineers, such as civil, computer, electrical, mechanical, software and aerospace. They had to research and type up what each engineer does, then discuss in groups. We then researched some famous engineers, such as Henry Ford and some famous software engineers, many of which are quite rich and famous now!
The amazing students to recieve an award this week are:
Damir Uimaitua from 1/2C for showing resilience when building paper cup towers.
Karrar Salman from 3/4A for showing respect and kindness during all STEM sessions.
Physical Education [PE] is a tremendous way to get students active while also teaching them important life skills, improve their physical health, and develop a love for being active.
During PE, students will:
- focus on fundamental skills [e.g. running, catching, balance]
- play games to reinforce the skills
- foster social skills
- celebrate their efforts, building confidence and a love for sport.
Each session will have a:
- warm-up activity to get their muscles ready
- skill development activity
- fun game - teamwork and cooperation.
We have started PE this term by playing students’ favourite games, teaching the skill of running, and for the 5/6s playing Interschool Sports.
