Writing

This term, our Grade 5 and 6 students will be learning how to write informative explanation texts. Using the topic of Wildfires over these two weeks, students have explored how and why these natural disasters occur, what environmental conditions contribute to them, and their impact on communities and ecosystems. Through research, discussion, and structured writing, students are learning how to organise their ideas clearly using cause and effect, technical vocabulary, and appropriate text structures. Their writing is beginning to demonstrate a deepening understanding of both the writing process and the science behind wildfires. We're incredibly proud of the thoughtful and engaging texts they are producing!

Inquiry

As part of our Inquiry learning this term, Grade 5 and 6 students are investigating the importance of laws and rules in our society. Students are exploring why communities create laws, the difference between rules and laws, and the roles of local, state, and federal governments in law-making. Through role-plays, discussions, and case studies, they examined real-life scenarios and considered the consequences when rules or laws are broken. This unit will hope to develop a strong sense of justice in our children to have a responsibility to be active citizens in a democratic society.

Numeracy

We have been working hard in numeracy. Our Year 5 and 6 students have been understanding measurement through practical, hands-on activities. They’ve explored length, capacity, and mass by using real-world tools such as measuring tapes, scales, and containers. These engaging tasks have helped them apply their knowledge in meaningful ways and build confidence in estimating and comparing units of measurement. Students are now beginning to investigate area and perimeter, using grid paper, whiteboards, and open-ended challenges to deepen their spatial reasoning and problem-solving skills. It's been wonderful to see such enthusiastic and active learning in action!

Reading

Our Grade 5 and 6 students have been engaging in a rich reading program that builds both foundational reading skills and deep comprehension. Phonics lessons have focused on long vowel sounds, helping students strengthen their decoding and spelling strategies. Alongside this, students have been reading powerful texts such as The Little Refugee and Beth: The Story of a Convict Child, using these stories to develop key comprehension strategies. They have been learning how to compare and contrast characters and events, explore rich vocabulary, and practise summarising, predicting, and inferring. These skills are helping students become thoughtful, reflective readers who can engage with texts on a deeper level.

REMINDERS

Homework is provided every Wednesday and marked the following Wednesday last session. Please talk to your children about the importance of homework and ensure they are attempting to undertake it.
