Dear Families
Welcome back to Term 3! We have had a smooth start to the term with students hitting the ground running with their learning and getting straight back into it. Our Community Leaders have stepped up to participate in our cohort assembly and present information, well done leaders! We are all looking forward to a fun and successful term.
Students have been building their reading and writing skills through shared and guided reading, systematic synthetic phonics and genre writing. We have started writing explanation texts that explore how plants grow. This links with our Inquiry unit- Animals and Environment. This week we are building our knowledge about what plants need to grow in order to prepare us for next week when we plant our own seeds!
In maths, we have started exploring time and fractions as our topics. Students have been practising telling time to o'clock and some are even practising half past! This is a great chance for parents to encourage learning at home by showing students clocks in the environment around you and asking them to help tell the time (for example- in the car, on a phone, a wall clock at home or out in the community).
In SEL, Students are continuing to work on the GEM principles (gratitude, empathy and mindfulness) and exploring how we can encompass these in our every day lives. At home you might ask your children what they are grateful for, to show empathy towards others, and to practise mindfulness when their minds start getting busy. We are also exploring our school value of Learning Together by engaging in group tasks and activities that involve working together to complete a problem. The students have been showing their Learning Together skills by helping each other, speaking politely and taking turns. Well done!
In Inquiry, we have started our new unit Animals and Environment by exploring what living and nonliving things are. You might like to talk to your child about things in the environment around you and discuss what things are living and which are non-living. Students are getting very clever at recognising needs in living things, such as food, water, sunlight, growth and movement.
