30th Anniversary Reception at the British Embassy/Oslava 30. výročí školy na Britském velvyslanectví v Praze

As the English College in Prague’s 30th year anniversary draws to a close, its graduates joined parents, staff, Governors and friends of the ECP at a magical evening at the British Embassy. It was an opportunity to look back at our achievements and forward to an exciting new era for the College.

For many of the graduates, the presence of ‘their’ Headmaster, Albert Hudspeth and his wife, Valerie, was one of the highlights of the evening, together with the first Director of Studies, Nigel Haward, and his wife, Jane, who was also the College's first Librarian. Everyone agreed that they hadn’t changed a bit!

There was lots of reminiscing about the early days of the English College, but also lots of excited chatter about the future. Year 3 student, Ariya Man, entranced guests with his moving model of the renovated Sokolovská building and was able to show it to the architect of the real thing - Tomáš Med - together with ECP alumni architects, Anna Švarc (2005), Martin Čeněk (2000) and Michal Zapletal (2018).

One of the earliest graduates at the celebration was Jan Brunner, who graduated in 1999, and who is now Deputy Czech Ambassador to Austria. Speaking on behalf of some 1700 IB graduates over the years Jan spoke warmly about the unique bond that connects all ECP alumni. He also recounted a story about the time he was introduced to our Royal Patron in London. As he memorably put it in his speech, “When the first thing the King of England thinks of when he hears the word ‘Prague’ is the English College, we must be doing something right.”

The conversation took place at the annual Diplomatic Reception in London, when the capital’s diplomats from all over the world gather in the splendid surroundings of Buckingham Palace. Jan had the honour of being introduced to Prince Charles - as he was then - who, when he heard that Jan was from Prague, said, “Prague? The English College in Prague, of which I am a proud Patron!” To which a quick-thinking Jan replied, “And of which I am a proud graduate!”

U příležitosti oslav 30. výročí založení Anglického gymnázia se jeho absolventi připojili k rodičům, zaměstnancům, členům správní rady a přátelům ECP při magickém večeru na Britském velvyslanectví. Byla to příležitost ohlédnout se za našimi úspěchy a těšit se na vzrušující novou éru školy.

Pro mnoho absolventů byla přítomnost „jejich“ ředitele Alberta Hudspetha a jeho manželky Valerie jedním z vrcholů večera, spolu s prvním zástupcem pro akademické záležitosti, Nigelem Hawardem, a jeho manželkou Jane, která působila jako první knihovnice školy. Všichni se shodli, že se ani trochu nezměnili!

Hodně se vzpomínalo na rané dny gymnázia, ale také se hodně nadšeně hovořilo o budoucnosti. Student 3. ročníku, Ariya Man, okouzlil hosty svým pohyblivým modelem naší zrekonstruované budovy v Sokolovské a měl příležitost ukázat ho architektovi budovy - Tomáši Medovi - a také absolventům ECP, kteří se věnují architektuře - Anně Švarc (2005), Martinovi Čeňkovi (2000) a Michalovi Zapletalovi (2018).

Jedním z prvních absolventů přítomným na naší oslavě byl Jan Brunner, který odmaturoval v roce 1999 a nyní je zástupcem českého velvyslance v Rakousku. Jan jménem přibližně 1700 absolventů IB v průběhu let vřele hovořil o jedinečném poutu, které spojuje všechny absolventy ECP. Vyprávěl také příběh o tom, jak byl v Londýně představen našemu královskému patronovi. Jan to památně vyjádřil ve svém projevu: „Když je první věc, na kterou britský král pomyslí, když slyší slovo ‚Praha‘, Anglické gymnázium, tak musíme dělat něco správně.“

Zmíněný seznamovací rozhovor se odehrál na každoroční diplomatické recepci v Londýně, kdy se místní diplomaté z celého světa shromažďují v nádherném prostředí Buckinghamského paláce. Jan měl tu čest být představen tehdejšímu princi Charlesovi, nynějšímu králi, který když uslyšel, že Jan pochází z Prahy, řekl: „Praha? Tam je Anglické gymnázium, jehož jsem hrdým patronem!“ Na to Jan pohotově odpověděl: „A já jsem jeho hrdým absolventem!“

Emma Best (2023)

Another graduate who attended the reception at the British Embassy was Emma Best (2023) who joined her parents, Dita and Erik, and two of her three ECP graduate siblings. Many readers will know Erik as Editor of the Fleet Sheet Final Word, and he has generously supported the College by advertising our Open Days in his publication for many years. 

Most of the staff, until recently, have never known a time when there wasn’t at least one Best in school. First, there was Nella (2017), then Anetta (2018), Michael (2020) and finally, Emma who graduated in 2023 and who is now finishing her second year at the University of Bath where she is studying for a BA in Education with Psychology.

But Emma’s life at university has not been all essay writing and lectures. She has also made time for her passion for ballroom dancing. As part of the Bath University Latin and Ballroom Club’s Committee, she helped organise their recent Strictly Come Bath event, by leading the club’s communications. 

Emma says, “It took a lot of planning, cooperation and patience to create the event. With constant coordination with the rest of our amazing committee, with over 10 other clubs and societies, our hosts and judges, there was never a moment’s rest!”

She even took part in the competition herself, as one of the Club’s ‘professionals’. This involved teaching a complete beginner how to dance the Quickstep in a few short weeks, choreographing a show routine for the first time and even  incorporating a bit of tap, a dance style she had never danced before.  She found it very rewarding to watch her ‘celebrity’s’ progress and was thrilled when they came third out of the ten competing couples. The very successful event, attracting an audience of over 250, raised hundreds of pounds for the winning charity, Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Další absolventkou, která se zúčastnila recepce na britském velvyslanectví, byla Emma Best (2023), jež se připojila ke svým rodičům, Ditě a Erikovi Bestovým, a dvěma ze svých tří sourozenců, absolventů ECP. Mnoho čtenářů zná pana Besta jako redaktora Fleet Sheet a Final Word, který štědře podporuje školu tím, že ve své publikaci již mnoho let inzeruje naše Dny otevřených dveří.

Většina zaměstnanců až donedávna nezažila dobu, kdy by ve škole nebyl alespoň jeden student jménem Best. Nejprve to byla Nella (2017), poté Anetta (2018), Michael (2020) a nakonec Emma, ​​která odmaturovala v roce 2023 a nyní dokončuje druhý ročník na univerzitě v Bath, kde studuje bakalářský program v oboru pedagogika s psychologií.

Život Emmy na univerzitě se však neomezuje jen na psaní esejů a přednášky. Věnuje se také své vášni pro společenský tanec. Jako členka výboru Latin and Ballroom Clubu své univerzity pomáhala organizovat jejich nedávnou akci Strictly Come Bath tím, že vedla komunikaci klubu.

Emma říká: „Vytvoření této akce vyžadovalo spoustu plánování, spolupráce a trpělivosti. Díky neustálé koordinaci se zbytkem našeho úžasného výboru, s více než 10 dalšími kluby a společnostmi, našimi hostiteli a porotci jsme byli neustále v jednom kole!“

Soutěže se dokonce sama zúčastnila jako jedna z „profesionálek“ klubu. To zahrnovalo naučit úplného začátečníka tančit quickstep během několika týdnů, poprvé dělat choreografii pro taneční sestavu a dokonce zakomponovat trochu stepu, tanečního stylu, který nikdy předtím nezkoušela. Sledování pokroku svých „celebrit“ ji velmi obohacovalo a byla nadšená, když se umístili na třetím místě z deseti soutěžících párů. Celkově to byla velmi úspěšná akce, která přilákala do publika více než 250 lidí a vybrala stovky liber pro vítěznou charitativní organizaci Alzheimer’s Research UK.

Artur Jasanský (2022) and Family

Another family that has spanned several years at the English College and that was represented at the British Embassy reception were the Jasanskýs: Mrs Jasanská, who served on the School Council while her sons were in school,  and her husband, Michael.  Their eldest son, Albert, graduated in 2016, with Alfred following in 2018. Their youngest, Artur, graduated in 2022 and he is now studying for an integrated Master’s in Biochemistry with Entrepreneurship at the University of Manchester. 

Artur has found a wonderful way to spend his summer this year. He has just started as a research intern at the Royal Botanic Gardens in southwest London. A UNESCO World Heritage site, Kew Gardens is a world-renowned scientific institution, covering 320 acres, housing the largest and most diverse botanical collections in the world, including over 50,000 living plants and a herbarium of seven million preserved specimens. 

This is an excellent opportunity for Artur as he will get hands-on experience working alongside leading scientists. But it won’t be all work as he will also be able to enjoy one of the most beautiful outdoor spaces in London. Kew is a very popular place for people wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of central London and relax in its landscapes and historic glasshouses.

Další rodinou, která strávila mnoho let při studiu na Anglickém gymnáziu a která byla zastoupena na recepci britského velvyslanectví, byli Jasanští. Přítomna byla paní Jasanská, která působila ve školské radě, když její synové chodili do školy, a její manžel Michael. Jejich nejstarší syn Albert v ECP dostudoval v roce 2016 a jeho bratr Alfred v roce 2018. Jejich nejmladší syn Artur maturoval v roce 2022 a nyní studuje integrovaný magisterský program v oboru biochemie s podnikáním na univerzitě v Manchesteru.

Artur našel skvělý způsob, jak strávit letošní léto. Právě začal pracovat jako výzkumný stážista v Královské botanické zahradě v jihozápadním Londýně. Kew Gardens, památka světového dědictví UNESCO, je světově uznávaná vědecká instituce o rozloze 320 akrů, která ukrývá největší a nejrozmanitější botanické sbírky na světě, včetně více než 50 000 živých rostlin a herbáře sedmi milionů konzervovaných exemplářů.

Pro Artura je to výborná příležitost, protože získá praktické zkušenosti s prací po boku předních vědců. Nebude to ale jen práce, protože si bude moci užít i jeden z nejkrásnějších venkovních prostor v Londýně. Kew je velmi oblíbeným místem pro lidi, kteří chtějí uniknout shonu centra Londýna a relaxovat v jeho prostorách a historických sklenících.

Estella Marlowe (2023)

Trinity College Dublin (TCD) is becoming a favourite university destination for English College in Prague graduates and one recent alumna, Estella Marlowe, has done extremely well since moving to Ireland to pursue a BSc in Midwifery. TCD’s Nursing programme is very highly regarded, ranking first in Ireland and the whole of the EU and 20th globally.

Estella’s teachers will remember her as a diligent student, with a strong community spirit and a lovely singing voice. Now, they can add ‘Stellar Scholarship Student’ to that description because she has joined the distinguished ranks of Trinity College Scholars, a group that includes such notable figures as Mary Robinson (Law, in 1966) - the first female President of Ireland and then United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights - and Samuel Beckett (Modern Languages, in 1926), winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature.

Trinity College Scholars are selected on merit and receive significant benefits during their time at university. This prestigious honour is awarded to students across all courses who demonstrate outstanding achievement in a set of non-compulsory exams. These benefits include free accommodation on campus for the academic year, the waiving of fees and registration charges, and certain free dining rights.

So it is no surprise that Estella has been celebrating. She says, “Finding out I was named one of the 72 scholars this year will probably be one of my fondest memories in College. Being showered with so much joy and love from my parents, professors and peers made this day absolutely unforgettable. I am so excited to see what opportunities this scholarship will bring me and hope that with my passion for midwifery, I can somehow make a difference in the world.”

Trinity College Dublin (TCD) se stává oblíbenou univerzitní destinací pro absolventy ECP a jedna z našich nedávných absolventek, Estella Marlowe, si od svého přesunu do Irska, kde studuje bakalářský program v oboru porodní asistentka, vede mimořádně dobře. Ošetřovatelský program na TCD je velmi ceněný, umístil se na prvním místě v Irsku i v celé EU a na 20. místě na světě.

Učitelé Estelly si ji budou pamatovat jako pilnou studentku se silným komunitním duchem a krásným zpěvem. Nyní k tomuto popisu mohou přidat i „hvězdná stipendistka“, protože se připojila k významným členům skupiny stipendistů Trinity College, zahrnuje takové významné osobnosti, jako je Mary Robinson (právo, v roce 1966) – první prezidentka Irska a tehdejší vysoká komisařka OSN pro lidská práva – a Samuel Beckett (moderní jazyky, v roce 1926), držitel Nobelovy ceny za literaturu.

Stipendisté ​​Trinity College jsou vybíráni na základě zásluh a během svého studia na univerzitě získávají značné výhody. Tereza Černá (2023)

For any motorsport devotee, three races stand out in the racing calendar: the Indy 500 in America, the Formula 1 Monaco Grand Prix and 24 Heures du Mans, the world’s most iconic endurance race. 

Tereza Černá has now been to Le Mans three times as a freelance motorsport journalist. She says, “If you had told little Tereza that this is what she would get to do one day,  she wouldn't have believed you. But if you can dream it, you can do it. The 24 Hours of Le Mans is so different from every other motorsport event and I'm so happy that I get to share stories from behind the scenes. My reports can be found on True Racing.cz and other platforms I regularly contribute to.”

Pro každého nadšence motoristického sportu vynikají v závodním kalendáři tři závody: Indy 500 v Americe, Velká cena Monaka Formule 1 a 24 hodin Le Mans, nejikoničtější vytrvalostní závod na světě. 

Tereza Černá se závodu v Le Mans zúčastnila již třikrát jako nezávislá novinářka věnující se motoristickému sportu. Říká: „Kdybyste malé Tereze řekli, že tohle jednou bude dělat, nevěřila by vám. Ale pokud si to dokážete vysnít, dokážete to. 24 hodin Le Mans je tak odlišný závod od všech ostatních motoristických akcí a já jsem moc ráda, že se mohu podělit o příběhy ze zákulisí. A Taste of Home for ECP Graduates in London/Chuť domova pro absolventy ECP v Londýně 

This is the time of year when our graduating class are preparing for the next chapter in their lives - the exciting move away from home to university. For any ECP graduates heading to London to study and who might be worried about how to find authentic Czech cooking, a ‘home from home’ awaits - one steeped in history and a deep connection, not only to the Czech and Slovak community in London, but also to the ECP, through Gina Hearn, who works with our graduates when they leave school. The British Czech & Slovak Association (BCSA) invites you to join them at their regular monthly meetings at  Bohemia House at 74 West End Lane, West Hampstead, NW6 2LX. 

These evenings are an opportunity for anyone interested in an evening of Czech food and chat to come together in a relaxed and informal setting. You can buy many typically Czech dishes that you might be missing and, of course, real Czech beer. The dates of these evenings are on the BCSA website and we hope this provides a comforting option for our graduates, connecting them not just with delicious food, but with a living piece of Czech and Slovak history in London. 

The building was bought after World War II, with the help of President Beneš, and it quickly became a popular meeting place for Czech and Slovak war veterans, who had fled Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to fight alongside the Allied forces. These brave men included Gina Hearn’s late father, Rudolf Poledník, who had served in the No. 311 (Czechoslovak) Squadron of the Royal Air Force. It was the RAF's only Czechoslovak-manned medium and heavy bomber squadron and it suffered the worst losses of any Czechoslovak formation in the RAF.  In total, 511 Czechoslovaks serving in Allied air forces were killed during WWII and of these, 273 (53 per cent) died while serving with 311 Squadron.

Rudolf Poledník survived and after the war, stayed in London and became manager of what was then called Czechoslovak National House, until he moved up to Manchester, where Gina was born, to open a butcher’s shop.Gina first visited the Club to see where her father had worked when she moved down to London in 1979 and she remembers the menu from that time, which featured this spoof cartoon of Jaroslav Hašek's iconic character, The Good Soldier Švejk. This bumbling character perfectly embodied the spirit of Czech humour and resilience. The menu’s portrayal of the French posters ‘Liberté, égalité, fraternité’ and Švejk’s, calling for ‘Vepřová, knedlík, zelí’ amusingly demonstrates the importance to Czechs of their national dish!

Začíná období roku, kdy se naši absolventi připravují na další kapitolu svého života – vzrušující odchod z domova na univerzitu. Na všechny absolventy ECP, kteří míří studovat do Londýna a kteří si možná dělají starosti s tím, jak najít autentickou českou kuchyni, čeká „domov daleko od domova“ – domov prodchnutý historií a hlubokým poutem nejen k české a slovenské komunitě v Londýně, ale také k ECP, a to prostřednictvím Giny Hearn, která s našimi absolventy po ukončení studia pracuje.Britská česko-slovenská asociace (BCSA) vás zve na pravidelná měsíční setkání v Bohemia House na adrese 74 West End Lane, West Hampstead, NW6 2LX. Tyto večery jsou příležitostí pro všechny, kteří mají zájem o večer plný českého jídla a povídání, aby se sešli v uvolněné a neformální atmosféře. Můžete si zde koupit mnoho typicky českých pokrmů, které vám možná chybí, a samozřejmě i pravé české pivo. Termíny těchto večerů jsou uvedeny na webových stránkách BCSA a doufáme, že to našim absolventům poskytne příjemnou možnost, která je spojí nejen s lahodným jídlem, ale i s živoucím kouskem české a slovenské historie v Londýně.Budova byla zakoupena po druhé světové válce s pomocí prezidenta Beneše a rychle se stala oblíbeným místem setkávání českých a slovenských válečných veteránů, kteří uprchli z nacisty okupovaného Československa, aby bojovali po boku spojeneckých sil. Mezi tyto statečné muže patřil i zesnulý otec Giny Hearn, Rudolf Poledník, který sloužil v 311. (československé) peruti Královského letectva (RAF). Byla to jediná peruť RAF se středními a těžkými bombardéry, kde byli Čechoslováky, a utrpěla nejhorší ztráty ze všech československých formací v RAF. Během druhé světové války bylo zabito celkem 511 Čechoslováků sloužících ve spojeneckých vzdušných silách, z nichž 273 (53 procent) zemřelo při službě u 311. perutě.Rudolf Poledník přežil válku a po ní zůstal v Londýně, kde se stal správcem tehdejšího Československého národního domu. Poté se přestěhoval do Manchesteru, kde si otevřel řeznictví. Tam si narodila Gina Hearn.Gina se přestěhovala do Londýna v roce 1979 a tehdy poprvé klub navštívila, aby si prohlédla, kde pracoval její otec. Pamatuje si tehdejší menu, na kterém byl obrázek této parodie ikonické postavy Jaroslava Haška, dobrého vojáka Švejka. Tato nešikovná postavička dokonale ztělesňovala ducha českého humoru a odolnosti. Zobrazení francouzských plakátů „Liberté, egalité, fraternité“ a Švejkova plakátu volajícího po „Vepřové, knedlíku, zelí“ vtipně ukazuje, jak důležitý je pro Čechy jejich národní pokrm!

David Cawte

The 30th anniversary celebrations have reminded us of the many people who have willingly volunteered their time and expertise over the years to support the ECP. One of those working away in the background was David Cawte who died on 6 June and who we remember with gratitude.

Our joint Founder, Dr Martyn Bond, writes:

“David was for a long time an assiduous Honorary Treasurer for the English College Foundation and also kept an eye on the College's finances in its early years. He very much enjoyed his visits to Prague, often when the Governors convened, and he was gently inquisitive about Czech specialities - in particular beer that he much enjoyed, and local garden seeds that he would take home to try in his allotment. In his personal relations he had keen antennae that soon identified those who he felt did not measure up to his high ethical standards. Richard Holme - our first Chairman of Governors - set great store by David’s judgment, both in financial matters and in terms of personal character.”

Oslavy 30. výročí nám připomněly mnoho lidí, kteří v průběhu let ochotně věnovali svůj čas a odborné znalosti podpoře ECP. Jedním z těch, kteří pracovali v pozadí, byl David Cawte, který zemřel 6. června a na kterého s vděčností vzpomínáme.

Spoluzakladatel ECP, Dr. Martyn Bond, napsal:

„David byl dlouhou dobu pilným čestným pokladníkem Nadace Anglického gymnázia (ECF) a v prvních letech také dohlížel na finance školy. Velmi si užíval svých návštěv Prahy, často v době, kdy se scházeli členové správní rady ECP, a byl měl zájem na české speciality – zejména pivo, které si velmi vychutnával, a místní zahradní semínka, která si vozil domů, aby je vyzkoušel na svém pozemku. V osobních vztazích měl dobrý čich, který brzy identifikoval ty, kteří v jeho očích nesplňovali jeho vysoké etické standardy. Richard Holme - první předseda správní rady ECP - si velmi vážil Davidova úsudku, a to jak ve finančních záležitostech, tak i ve věcech charakteru.“

Thuy Le Leová (2019)

Anyone who was at the 2019 Graduation ceremony will remember Thuy Ly Leová speaking on behalf of the graduates. The theme of their graduation that year was ‘evolution’ and Ly spoke eloquently about her journey at the English College and some of the changes she had seen during her six years in school.  As the ECP again navigates a period of change, there is one thing that will remain a constant, as Ly said in her speech, and that is the welcoming and inclusive environment created by the College’s cultural diversity and international mindset, which was particularly significant for young people like Ly, a Czech-Vietnamese student.

Since leaving the ECP, and moving to London, Ly has been making a name for herself as a mixed-media director and illustrator, after graduating from the Camberwell University of the Arts London. She is known for her innovative approach, experimenting with technology to push the boundaries of illustration and sequential storytelling. Her work blends 3D, 2D, motion capture and XR to create immersive and interactive experiences. 

Ly’s talent and hard work is increasingly getting noticed. She was nominated for the 2023 "Future 50: Founders and Freelancer Awards" by the University of the Arts London, and earlier this month, she had the opportunity to share her artistic journey with a wider audience at the Czech Centre London. 

Ly says, “I was truly honoured to have been able to talk to such an inspiring and talented group of Czech designers and artists. It was so insightful hearing everyone’s unique journey and perspective on ‘identity’.  I was so nervous because my last piece of public speaking was probably that speech at the graduation ceremony in Betlémská kaple, but I couldn’t have been happier to have pushed myself and taken on this amazing opportunity.  I am truly proud to have been able to represent not only the Czech, but also the Czech Vietnamese, creative community in London and have a stage to talk about my personal art journey.”

Každý, kdo byl na slavnostním maturitním večeru v roce 2019, si jistě vzpomene na Thuy Ly Leovou, která zde promluvila jménem absolventů. Tématem jejich večera byla „evoluce“ a Ly výmluvně hovořila o své cestě během studia v ECP a o některých změnách, které v průběhu těchto šesti let. ECP opět prochází obdobím změn, ale jedna věc zůstane konstantní. Ly ve svém uvedla, že škola poskytuje inkluzivní prostředí vytvořené kulturní rozmanitostí a mezinárodním smýšlením, což je obzvláště významné pro mladé lidi, jako je Ly, která je česko-vietnamská studentka.

Od doby, kdy Ly opustila ECP a přestěhovala se do Londýna, si buduje jméno jako režisérka a ilustrátorka smíšených médií. Absolvovala Camberwell University of the Arts a je známá svým inovativním přístupem, experimentováním s technologiemi, které posouvají hranice ilustrace a sekvenčního vyprávění příběhů. Její práce kombinuje metody 3D, 2D, motion capture a XR ve snaze vytvořit pohlcující a interaktivní zážitky.

Lyin talent a tvrdá práce zůstávají bez povšimnutí. Byla nominována na cenu „Future 50: Founders and Freelancer Awards“ za rok 2023, kterou uděluje University of the Arts London, a začátkem tohoto měsíce měla možnost sdílet svou uměleckou cestu s širším publikem v Českém centru v Londýně.

Ly říká: „Byla jsem opravdu poctěna, že jsem mohla hovořit s tak inspirativní a talentovanou skupinou českých designérů a umělců. Bylo velmi poučné slyšet každou jedinečnou cestu a pohled každého z nich na „identitu“. Byla jsem velmi nervózní, protože mým posledním veřejným projevem byl pravděpodobně projev na maturitním večeru v Betlémské kapli, ale nemohla jsem být šťastnější, že jsem se do toho pustila a využila této úžasné příležitosti. Jsem opravdu hrdá na to, že jsem mohla reprezentovat nejen českou, ale i česko-vietnamskou kreativní komunitu v Londýně a stát na pódiu, kde mohu hovořit o své osobní umělecké cestě.“
