Wellbeing Curriculum:
Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships
Research shows that students who participate in rigorously designed and well-taught Social and Emotional Learning programs (SELs) demonstrate improved mental and social health, have improved relationships with peers, are less likely to engage in risky and disruptive behaviour, show improved academic outcomes and have improved capacity for help-seeking. This term we are looking to cover two topics: Emotional Literacy and Problem Solving.
Topic: Emotional Literacy
This series of lessons is designed to ensure students explain the influence of emotions on behaviour, learning and relationship. Analyse factors that influence their ability to regulate emotions.
The activities will cover:
Activity 1: What do emotions look like?
Activity 2: Recognising positive, negative and mixed emotions
Activity 3: Intense emotions
Activity 4: A roller-coaster of emotions
Topic: Problem Solving
This series of lessons is ensuring students devise strategies and plans to assist in completing challenging tasks, making decisions or resolving problems. Teach them to identify factors that influence decision-making, causes and effects of conflict and practise different strategies to resolve problems.
The activities will cover:
Activity 1: We have a problem, how can we deal with it?
Activity 2: Exploring what works
Activity 3: Problem-solving panel
Circle Time & Weekly Behaviour Expectations
As part of our approach to recognising positive behaviours, we have a weekly focus where we recognise and teach a specific behaviour from our School-Wide Expectations. We do this through Circle Time, which also serves as an important approach to fostering a sense of connectedness, safety and trust amongst our students within our classes.
Other activities:
Education Week 18th - 22nd May
This year to recognise ‘Education Week’ Hampton Primary School is inviting all families into classrooms to showcase facets of our Wellbeing program. We hope you can join us on Thursday the 21st of May from 2:40 - 3:30pm to be a part of our Resilience, Rights & Respectful Relationships teaching in action! If you have more than one child, we kindly ask that you split your time across the classrooms and engage with the activities or showcasing of learning, which is planned for that year level.
Upstanders
Our 2026 Upstanders Program will provide an opportunity where students can apply to be an Upstander. Upstanders is run in conjunction with other Bayside schools and Bayside Council which allows the students to learn strategies that they can use to encourage inclusivity and stand up or help others. Click on this video here to see a glimpse of a previous year's Upstander’s project.
LIDSQUAD
Students will have an opportunity to apply to be a LIDSQUAD participant if they wish. This application will be open to Year 5 and 6 students. LIDSQUAD will occur during lunch time each Thursday throughout Term 2 and students will work with Cindi Kunaratnam and Alicia Blundell.
Encouraging Expected Behaviours – ‘Hampton Hero’
Informed by the 8 Positive Classroom Management Strategies, which are grounded in behavioural science, we know that a praise-to-correction ratio of at least 4:1 leads to greater success when learning new skills. At HPS, we are working towards greater consistency in how we recognise positive behaviour and how we share this with families.
To support this, we have introduced a school-wide digital acknowledgement system. When a student demonstrates an expected behaviour, any HPS staff member can send a notification to parents via Compass. This notification, titled ‘Hampton Hero’, is delivered via email and will appear on your child’s Compass profile. The email includes prompts to help you access and view the notification.
The behaviours being recognised align with our school norms and are linked to the Hampton Primary School-Wide Expected Behaviours flipbook, which was shared with all families during the Term One Parent-Teacher Interviews.

Below are two examples of how this notification appears when viewed on a desktop browser. You will notice a feature that allows you to ‘acknowledge’ the notification; selecting this option lets staff know that you have received and read the communication (see Example 2).

As with any new system, we are working with Compass to ensure it meets its intended purpose. We appreciate your patience as we continue to refine and improve its usability. If you would like to share your experience when receiving this notification, please respond to our anonymous Parent Survey.
