Reading

In reading, children will develop reading strategies as they become more independent and apply their phonemic knowledge when reading.

Students will learn to decode words using their sound and letter knowledge and be able to track the print by touching each word. Students are expected to read one of their take home books every night and learn to read the Coloured Memory Words that are sent home. They will receive a certificate once they are able to read the words at each level. Words the students don’t know will be sent home for them to learn in their Home Learning Book. Please check the Home Learning book so you know which words need to be practised.

Phonics

Continual work on phonics will be implemented in class activities daily. Knowing the sounds of the alphabet and recognising the letters is fundamental to your child's reading and writing development at this level.  We will be focusing on word families, alliteration, rhymimg words and open and closed syllables.

Writing

Students will be writing recounts of events and  descriptive writing using their knowledge of letters and sounds. Students will learn to identify the concepts of print such as leaving spaces between words, capital letters and full stops. They will be involved in formal handwriting sessions and learn to form the letters of the alphabet using verbal pathways and correct entry and exit points.

Speaking and Listening

Students will deliver short oral presentations to peers, using appropriate voice levels and speaking clearly.
