World Maths Day

At Kilvington, some of the most powerful learning happens when students learn with and from one another. This was on full display at the end of Term 1, as our Junior and Senior School students came together to celebrate World Maths Day.

Led by our Senior School Maths Leaders in collaboration with Junior School STEM and Student Leadership teams, the day was designed to inspire curiosity, challenge thinking and create meaningful connections across year levels. It was a clear example of what is possible in a school where students of all ages share one campus and one learning culture.

Students in Years 3–6 took part in a student-led Maths Quiz, encouraging them to think critically, apply their knowledge and persist through challenge.

At the same time, younger students engaged in hands-on buddy activities and a dedicated Active Maths Trail, where they explored concepts such as estimating, pattern recognition and number combinations through practical, collaborative tasks.

Across the School, there was a tangible sense of energy as students worked together to solve problems, test ideas and support one another. Senior students stepped confidently into leadership roles, guiding and encouraging younger learners, while Junior students embraced the opportunity to stretch their thinking in new and engaging ways.

For many students, the day captured what they value most about learning mathematics at Kilvington. As Aanya (Year 3) reflected, “I love maths because the teachers make it fun and engaging. I also enjoy the possibilities and how everything connects, like a loop,” while Jamie (Year 3) appreciated “the range of maths programs, and the questions are challenging.”

That sense of challenge and growth was echoed by older students. “I enjoy the challenge of Maths at Kilvington. It pushes my thinking, and everyone is supportive and willing to help each other,” shared Jasper (Year 5), with Hugo (Year 5) adding that “when I need help, my teacher is always there to support me. I also feel safe to make mistakes.”

Others spoke to the joy and shared experience of the day itself. “I love all the Maths at Kilvington because it is fun, competitive, and I am learning a lot,” said Raymond (Year 5), while Irena (Year 5) noted simply, “I love that the teacher makes it fun and easy to understand.”

Together, these reflections speak to a culture where challenge is embraced, effort is valued, and every student is supported to see themselves as a capable mathematician.
