WWI Expo

On 20 November, the Year 9s presented their WWI research findings to the College Community in a History Expo shown in the MMC.

After a term of learning, researching, and studying the First World War, the Year 9s presented their creative projects based on forgotten heroes of the war. The year 9 Student Representatives organised a Cake Stall featuring baked goods from WWI such as Anzac biscuits, War Cake and Soldiers Biscuits.

All of the proceeds were donated to the local RSL branch to support returned service men and women and their families.

Working on this project was really insightful, in terms of learning about new people and countries’ history. I enjoyed discovering new things about my own heritage and Ireland’s history during and before WWI. I learnt new things about Patrick Pearse, the leader of the Easter Uprising, which I enjoyed. I also learnt new history and new facts about Ireland and the past.

Something that really shocked me was that boys were lying about their age to apply, meaning they were really willing and almost desperate. It’s inspiring to know they wanted to fight for our country, but it’s really sad that they didn’t understand what they were walking into.

I found that learning about my person’s war experience was an interesting time. I found my person, Harry Thorpe, to have an experience like no other as an Aboriginal soldier, not only did he received a rank during the war but he received military honors as well. It opened my eyes to untold stories of the First Nations soldiers of Australia.
