Infants and Primary

INFANTS
The end of year is finishing on a high with so many fun activities taking place this week and next. We are all looking forward to our Whole-school PBL Celebration on the last day of school with lots of fun planned for everyone! Many classes are having their final ‘Feather Celebration’ and we also have our Annual Presentation Night on Thursday 11/12. Please keep an eye on Compass and Facebook for details.
Our K-2 students had a fantastic excursion to Canberra recently – great hands on experiences at the National Reptile Zoo with a chance to pat a crocodile and a snake. We met lots of interesting reptiles up close and really enjoyed learning interesting facts, feeding them and patting them too. Our next stop was Cockington Green Gardens where we enjoyed a mini-steam engine train ride around the gardens before exploring the villages and displays. A highlight was carefully seeking out and spying some sneaky characters including minions, Where’s Wally, a crafty fox and a cheeky streaker! All our students had a really great day with lots of happy smiles and chatter and a few sleepy faces on the way home.
Our Intensive Swimming Scheme has been running over the last fortnight for some Year 2 and Yindy students, and they have been enjoying the chance to cool off in the pool. Miss Downey, Mrs McGrath and Jayden have been helping them learn the vital skills of swimming and water safety and they are all making great progress. A huge thank you to all for making this program work for our students!
Wishing everyone a very Merry Christmas and happy, relaxing and safe Summer holidays with your nearest and dearest. See you all recharged and ready for all the great things that 2026 will bring us.
KINDERGARTEN/Year 1
It’s almost a wrap for school for 2025 and we are all ready to take it easy, let go of the routines and get some go slow mode on! It has been a fantastic year in our K/1 classroom and all students should be super proud of their year at school. The next week at school will be spent revising our learning, winding down, enjoying games with our friends and getting into the Christmas spirit by making some decorations. Happy Christmas and happy holidays to all!
Year 1/2 Classroom News
As we reach the final weeks of the school year, I’ve been reflecting on just how much our wonderful Year 1/2 students have grown. It has been such a joy watching them develop their confidence, skills and personalities throughout the year, and I feel incredibly lucky to have been their teacher. I am already excited to hear the stories they’ll return with after the Christmas holidays, and I hope all families enjoy a safe, restful and happy break.
Across the last fortnight, we have been busily wrapping up much of our learning for the year, filling in a few gaps and reinforcing the more challenging concepts to help set our students up for success next year.
In maths, we have really been bunkering down on learning to tell the time. Almost the whole class can now confidently read o’clock and half-past times, an amazing achievement! We have used a range of games, including maths tag, to practise these skills, and the students have been enjoying this immensely.
We have also been refining our knowledge of 3D shapes. Students have been exploring the names of different shapes, identifying the 2D shapes they can see on each 3D object, and counting their vertices and edges.
In English, we have been reading The Twits by Roald Dahl. The story is a gruesome but entertaining tale about a very unkind husband and wife who play tricks on each other, trap birds to make “bird pie,” and keep monkeys in cages to perform circus tricks!
We have been learning how interesting characters help bring stories to life, and students have been creating their very own new character to join the Twits’ strange and chaotic world. We are excited to weave these new family members into the story. One creative character of note so far is “Stinky Von Stink,” created by Michael, a mischievous son who hates birds and loves eating glue!
We also had our K–2 Canberra Excursion, which was a fantastic day for all students! We learned so much about reptiles at the Reptile Park, and the students had a blast searching for miniatures throughout Cockington Green Gardens. It was a day full of excitement, curiosity and happy memories.
Our Year 2 students have begun the Swim Scheme program every afternoon. A huge thank you to Mrs Downey and Mrs McGrath for organising such a wonderful opportunity for our students, and to Jayden Cutting, Mrs Shore and Mrs Batt for supporting students in the pool.
In cooking, Mrs Corcoran taught us how to make delicious pancakes with choc chips and raspberries. I don’t think I’ve ever seen a cooking product disappear so quickly, they were absolutely devoured!
We were very lucky to have Mrs Harpley and Greg take us for a gymnastics session. Students loved flipping, tumbling, balancing and jumping their way through each activity. They practised walking on the balance beams, bouncing on the mini tramp, somersaulting around the bars, and rolling across mats. It was a wonderful and energetic sporting experience for all.
As we head into the end of the year, I would like to wish all of our students and their families a safe, joyful and restful holiday break, I can’t wait to see everyone again in the new year!

Year 2/3
Year 2/3 have been very busy this term, we have been working on improving our sentence structure and vocabulary through daily sentence writing and using new vocabulary from our fluency passage. Year 2's enjoyed their league tag gala day and their excursion to Canberra this term. In Science we were studying how things grow and we even managed to grow our own bean plant. We've enjoyed our cooking lessons, working together to make some yummy food. It's been a busy term and we've had lots of fun learning together.

Superb event (“best day ever!!”)
On Tuesday students who reached Superb level of our Merit Scheme celebrated with a day out in town.
First we went to the park and enjoyed a play. After this we cooled off in the Boorowa Bakery with morning tea and a fizzy drink. By this time we were ready for a swim so we headed to the pool. We had a fantastic time having crocodile races, playing mermaids, searching for toys on the bottom of the pool and practicing our diving.
Our last stop was lunch at Shaun’s Fresh where we had bubble tea and sushi. It was delicious! We had a very slow walk back to school where we chilled out in the library and made special bracelets and built Lego. We ended the day with a surprise gift bag. Congratulations to these students.
Mrs Corkhill
And what the students thought of the day !

Primary Newsletter Snippet
As we wrap up the school year, we would like to extend a heartfelt thank you to all of our parents and carers for your incredible support throughout 2025. It has been a wonderful year of learning, growth, and achievement. Our students have worked hard and deserve a well-earned break, and we look forward to all the exciting opportunities that 2026 will bring.
We wish our Year 6 students all the very best as they transition into high school. Thank you for your leadership, enthusiasm, and outstanding contribution to our school this year – we are so proud of you.
We are also excited to share a new initiative beginning in 2026. Our school has been selected as one of just ten schools to participate in a Fundamental Movement Skills program as part of the rollout of the new PD/H/PE syllabus across K–6. We look forward to seeing the positive impact this will have on our students’ physical development and confidence.
In 2026 Boorowa Central is developing a more intensive approach to teaching FMS in infants and primary
Why teach fundamental movement skills?
The development of Fundamental Movement Skills (FMS) is an important step towards ensuring lifelong involvement in physical activity. It has been stated that in the early years it takes between 240 and 600 minutes of instruction time to become proficient in one FMS. Proficiency in skills like throwing, catching, kicking, leaping, and balancing, allows students to explore a range of movement options and establish active lifestyles.
Isn’t being able to run throw catch and jump just a natural development for children?
Several studies have shown if we simply give children sport equipment and time for free play, then they do not significantly improve their fundamental movement skills.
Just like children need explicit instruction to develop reading, spelling and writing.
They also need explicit instruction to develop their fundamental movement skills.
The Department of Education has identified explicit teaching practices as one of the evidence-based themes for practice that improves student educational outcomes.
Wishing all families a safe, happy, and restful holiday break. We can’t wait to see everyone refreshed and ready for a fantastic 2026!
5/6 Newsletter Snippet
Throughout the year, 5/6 have been learning about the power of gratitude and empathy. As part of this work, students wrote gratitude letters to a range of businesses in Boorowa to recognise the important role they play in our community.
Last Friday, we had the wonderful opportunity to walk around town and personally deliver these letters. Students were able to express their appreciation face-to-face and practise their communication skills with local business owners. The joy it brought to our students, staff, and the businesses themselves was incredible—it truly was a “feel-good Friday.”
We are so proud of the maturity, kindness, and confidence our 5/6 students demonstrated. What a beautiful way to end the year!
