Year 9 Geography

Excursion to Rayner’s Orchard

Students of 9.10 and 9.11 set out on Monday 19 August, to visit one of our local agriculture businesses, Rayner’s Orchard. There, they conducted fieldwork to investigate firsthand how the area’s biome was modified to produce food.

During the excursion, students participated in a range of activities, including an informative tour, sampling fruit from the trees in season, chopping and bottling their own jar of fruit, enjoying a leisurely tractor ride, and completing a field sketch.

During our time at Rayner’s Orchard, we embarked on a variety of fun and insightful activities that expanded our knowledge on the current topic we are learning about which is biomes. We started off by bottling pears which taught us how to preserve fruits and not waste anything. Next, we went on a walk around the orchard where we not only learnt about several different fruits, but we also got to indulge in tasting them. During this walk we learnt about the environment which certain plants thrive in and their relationship to the biome, soil and climate. After that, we went on a peaceful tractor ride, where we got to embrace the beauty of the orchard and see all the different fruit trees within and the temperate broad leaf forest biome surrounding. To conclude we did a field sketch which assisted us to apply what we had learnt during our time at Rayner’s orchard to our work. Overall, this was an enjoyable and insightful excursion which has given us a deeper appreciation towards nature and its treasures.
