Positive Behaviour for Learning

Every child has the right to learn and every teacher has the right to teach. 

        Lesson Plan: Effort and Behaviour in Class 

 

Step 1: List Learning Intentions and Success Criteria

We are learning to: identify what positive behaviour for learning looks like

 

What it looks like: It will look like me showing a positive attitude towards learning, staying focused in class, showing active listening and actively participating in class discussions and group work

 

Step 2:  List a rationale for teaching the behaviour 

Why is it important?

Teachers are always observing the behaviour and effort that students put into their school work and the skills they display that are conducive to learning at a high standard. However, this hasn’t been defined for students, so in order for students to know what is expected of them, we need to make it really clear and explicit. This lesson uses a rubric for students to look at exactly what we mean by behaviour and effort and provide them with the tools to be able to reflect on themselves as learners and self-assess. 

 

Step 3:  Identify examples and non-examples of the desired behaviour What would the behaviour look/sound like?                      

Examples

 

Having a positive attitude towards their learning 

Being considerate of others and respectful towards their learning 

Showing active listening with working in a group 

Participating and contributing to class discussions and group work

Staying focused and on task when working 

Share jobs during group work to make sure everyone has something to do 

 

What would the behaviour not look/sound like?

Non-examples

 

Distracting others and not being considerate of their learning time 

Interrupting and talking over people in group discussions 

Staying silent during group work

Working on your own thing during a group activity and not contributing to the work 

Letting other people do all of the work while you waste time
