Assembly

Class 2/3 with Kim

During this term our class has been learning about mushrooms.  We have a mushroom growing kit that we are caring for throughout the term to grow mushrooms so we can harvest and undertake some cooking in our new canteen kitchen.  We have been learning lots of facts about mushrooms like:

  • Mushroom spores are not seeds but are vital for fungi reproduction, spreading their genetic material to create new mushrooms.
  • Spores travel through the air, hitch rides on animals, or get moved by water and can germinate into mycelium under the right conditions.
  • Mushrooms play an essential role in the ecosystem by decomposing organic matter and recycling nutrients. They also help to improve soil health by breaking down complex organic compounds into simpler forms that can be absorbed by plants.
  • Mushrooms are neither plants nor animals.
  • Lightening boosts mushroom growth.
  • Mushrooms can turn plastics into food.
