Year 4 Trip Maritime Museum

Year 4's trip to the Maritime Museum was an educational journey back in time that enthralled and engaged every one of us. The highlight of the visit was the interactive exhibit on the Endeavour, where we could immerse ourselves in what conditions would have been like. We all decided we would not like to have been on the voyage. This experience allowed us to explore the ship's decks, quarters, and galley, bringing history vividly to life.

We marvelled at the cramped conditions and learned about the daily routines and challenges faced by the crew, fostering a deeper appreciation for historical voyages. “I found it really intriguing how we got to go inside a replica of the Endeavour that Captain Cook sailed. It really helped us understand the conditions they would have experienced. We were shocked at how low the ceilings were. Joseph Banks had to sleep in a hammock because he was over 6 feet tall. He let his dogs sleep in his cabin.” - Carolina Fernandes-Leber.

In addition to the Endeavour, the museum's extensive collection of early navigational tools and maps captivated our imaginations. We examined intricate instruments like astrolabes and sextants, discovering how sailors used these tools to chart their courses across uncharted waters. The detailed and beautiful Ilma (Bardi dance objects) with their artistic flourishes and stunning colours, provided a window into the past, showing how early Aboriginals viewed the world. This exploration sparked a flurry of questions from us, as we were eager to understand how these ancient tools worked and how navigation has evolved over centuries.

The visit was not just a passive learning experience; it was an active engagement that piqued our curiosity. Museum staff and educators were on hand to answer questions and provide demonstrations, further enriching our experience. Our inquisitiveness was evident as we as our guides answered a range of questions. “It was a really good learning experience as we could step into the shoes of early explorers, and I could make comparisons between how it was for them and how it is for us today.” Freya Wang.

To cap off the memorable day, we had the opportunity to explore a warship exhibit. This part of the tour brought the realities of naval warfare to the forefront, with authentic artefacts and detailed reconstructions of life on a military vessel. We could see and feel what it was like to be on a warship, from the very high decks to the officer's quarters. This final adventure left a lasting impression, rounding out an educational trip that combined fun, learning, and a deep dive into history.
